Job Title: COBOL/ALC Developer Job Location: Remote Security Clearance: Must be a US Citizen and able to obtain a Public Trust clearance and complete a favorable background check. Kwaan Bear Technology (KBT) We are seeking a skilled COBOL/ALC Developer to join our software modernization development project team. This role focuses on analyzing, maintaining, and enhancing legacy mainframe systems while contributing to the transformation and migration of applications to modern platforms. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in COBOL, Assembler Language Code (ALC), and mainframe environments, along with experience in system integration and modernization initiatives. Key Responsibilities:
Analyze, design, develop, test, and maintain complex legacy mainframe applications using COBOL and ALC.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support the modernization and migration of existing applications to newer technologies.
Conduct thorough analysis of legacy systems to identify functional components, dependencies, and technical challenges.
Develop and maintain technical documentation, including code analysis reports, system flow diagrams, and modernization roadmaps.
Provide system optimization, troubleshooting, and support for production issues in mainframe environments.
Participate in performance tuning, system integration testing, and quality assurance processes.
Work closely with business analysts, solution architects, and modernization engineers to deliver efficient, scalable, and future-ready solutions.
Migrate data and programs while ensuring system stability, accuracy, and consistency during the modernization effort.
Identify and resolve compatibility or performance issues between legacy and modernized systems.
Adhere to coding standards, development best practices, and project timelines.
Required Skills & Experience:
5+ years of experience in COBOL development, with proven expertise in mainframe technologies.
Strong hands-on experience with Assembler Language Code (ALC) in mainframe environments.
Deep understanding of IBM z/OS, JCL (Job Control Language), and other mainframe tools.
Experience in system analysis, debugging, and troubleshooting legacy code.
Familiarity with data formats such as VSAM, DB2, and flat files.
Exposure to modernization projects, including migration to modern platforms (e.g., cloud, microservices, or distributed systems).
Knowledge of tools such as Endevor, CA7, IMS, CICS, or similar.
Ability to analyze existing code and documentation to define requirements for system improvements.
Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and analytical thinking.
Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with modern programming languages such as Java, C++, Python, or SQL.
Knowledge of middleware tools and APIs for integrating mainframe systems with modern applications.
Familiarity with cloud migration strategies (e.g., AWS Mainframe Modernization, Azure, or GCP).
Experience with automated tools for code analysis, refactoring, or reverse engineering.
Background in Agile development methodologies.
