Scope of Work

The GIS technician manages, analyzes, and visualizes spatial data using GIS software. This role requires good attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The GIS technician must also have good communication skills, as they will be working with a variety of stakeholders to provide geospatial data analysis and support.

Essential Job Duties • Maintain and update spatial databases, including data entry, verification, and validation as assigned. • Produce maps, charts, and other visual representations of data using GIS software. • Assist in the development and administration of digital datasets for utilities, planning, engineering, development services, and other departments within the city. • Provide data by scanning through digital archives, research of city and county utility plans and As-Builts. • Provide technical support to departmental users on GIS software and tools. • Collaborate with other team members to develop and maintain data standards and procedures. • Geo-reference/digitize new vector data from property surveys, tax records, engineering documents, etc. • Collects, downloads, and import GIS data into database using Trimble GPS hardware. • Works on job specific task as assigned by supervisor. • Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Physical and Environmental Conditions • Ability to lift and transport equipment up to 50 lbs. • Ability to sit, stand, and transport self from building to building. • Ability to drive safely to locations requiring address validation within the city. • Ability to kneel, walk, and twist while in the process of acquiring, verifying, and validating data.

Required Qualifications • High School graduate or GED equivalent required. Bachelor of Science or associate degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) related degree preferred; two (2) to three (3) years of database related experience preferred; working knowledge of computers (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, etc.) • GIS certifications such as ArcGIS Pro Foundation or ArcGIS Desktop Foundation are a plus. • Valid Texas Driver's License.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills • Proficiency in use of ESRI GIS software and tools, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, and/or other GIS software. • Knowledge of geospatial analysis, mapping techniques, and cartography. • Experience working with spatial data, including data entry, analysis, and visualization. • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. • Good analytical and problem-solving skills. • Good communication and collaboration skills. • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. • Good organizational skills and attention to detail • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines. • Ability to read and interpret technical materials. • Good oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. • Willingness to learn and take on new challenges.
