Assistant, Associate or Professor, Medical and Cancer Genetics Programs, Clinician Scholar pathway
The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch) and the University of Washington (UW) are jointly recruiting a full-time faculty member. The position will be dual appointed with a primary faculty appointment in the Clinical Research Division at Fred Hutch and a secondary appointment in a UW department determined by board certification and research/clinical interests. The position will report to the Senior Vice President (SVP) of the Clinical Research Division at Fred Hutch.
This position is designed for a physician who will provide strategic direction and business development with a strong vision to develop and grow the Fred Hutch Cancer Genetics Program within the larger Fred Hutch Sloan Precision Oncology Institute. This leader will contribute to our mission of delivering outstanding clinical care and developing excellence in research in the areas of cancer genetics, inherited risk, risk assessment, and cancer risk reduction, including surveillance and prevention.
The successful candidate is expected to:
Lead Fred Hutch’s Hereditary Cancer Genetics Research and Clinical Programs
Galvanize multi-disciplinary translational research within Fred Hutch
The successful candidate will enter a vibrant and dynamic research environment with an opportunity to lead and collaborate with basic, translational, public health, and clinical cancer genetics researchers across diverse disciplines. The University of Washington School of Medicine is the designated medical school for Alaska, Montana, and Idaho, which, with Washington, form the WAMI region. The Fred Hutch is the only NCI designated Cancer Center in WAMI, providing unique research and clinical opportunities in this largely rural area. The candidate will serve as an academic, clinical, and educational leader charged with organizing, directing, and expanding the clinical efforts for an established team of cancer genetics clinicians. The successful candidate will also foster and further develop an environment that facilitates clinical and translational research.
This position will have primary oversight of the cancer genetics clinical service, which includes multidisciplinary risk assessment and cancer risk reduction for complex and high-risk individuals. The position would be responsible for developing and meeting strategic priorities to deliver superior outcomes and drive new patient growth. Priorities include:
Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion
Recruitment of world-class clinicians, researchers, and staff
Integrating cancer prevention efforts across and between different cancer specialty groups
Leading and/or facilitating translational research collaborations in cancer genetics and precision prevention across the Cancer Consortium
Educating and training researchers and clinicians in cancer genetics
Creating a vision for the future of cancer genetics and precision prevention for the region
The successful candidate will be appointed in the Clinician Scholar track and will devote approximately 40% of time to clinical care based on the candidate’s interests and institutional need. The remainder of the candidate’s time will be protected for research and administrative tasks associated with the Fred Hutch medical genetics, clinical and research programs, in addition to teaching and mentorship.
Fred Hutch and University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. Teaching responsibilities will include coordination of informal teaching and formal didactics with affiliated training and fellowship programs, for clinicians, and the general medical community. This position will partner with the University of Washington Medical Genetics division to align cancer genetics care.
Appointment to the full-time faculty at the UW would be at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor, without tenure (WOT). Academic appointments at the University of Washington will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic rank. University of Washington assistant professors WOT are eligible for multi-year appointments, and associate and full professors WOT hold indefinite appointments that both align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.
