CUSTODIAN JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Custodian
SUPERVISES: N/A
JOB GOAL: To maintain the physical school facilities in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety so that full educational utilization may be made at all times.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1.Possesses High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Must have not less than three years verified successful work experience.
3. Demonstrates aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.
4. Must be able to lift 75 pounds.
5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Principal or his/her designee.
SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Offices and Conference Rooms
- Vacuums carpet daily
- Empties trash cans daily.
- Dusts/polishes office furniture, bookshelves, etc., daily.
- Empties and cleans all ash receptacles daily.
- Computer Room (if appropriate)
- Vacuums daily (does not sweep)
- Empty trash can daily.
- Damp mops, waxes, and strips old wax as needed.
- Lounge and Work Area
- Vacuums/sweeps floors daily.
- Empty trash can daily.
- Dusts all furniture daily.
- Cleans and defrost refrigerator as needed.
- Clean the microwave oven as needed.
- Wet mops floor waxes, and strips old wax as needed.
- Scrubs and disinfects sink daily.
- Keep the mail room clean and orderly.
- Thoroughly cleans restrooms daily.
- Scrubs, scours, and disinfects sinks.
- Scrubs, scours, and disinfects commodes.
- Sweeps, mops, and disinfects floors.
- Ensures that soap, tissue, and paper towels are available.
- Student Restrooms
- Wet mops or scrubs floors with disinfectant detergent.
- Empties trash cans daily.
- Scours and disinfects sink daily.
- Scours and disinfects commodes daily. No rust or water ring shall exist.
- Cleans partitions, doors, window frames, sills, and waste receptacles as needed.
- Cleans all mirror, shelving, dispensers, chromium fixtures, and piping.
- Services paper towels, hand soap, and toilet paper daily. Soap dispensers will be maintained in a clean condition, free of excess soap, gum, etc. If malfunction of a dispenser occurs, this will be reported to the Building Administrator.
- Ensures that traps remain free of odor at all times.
- Empties sanitary napkin receptacles daily. Cleans, disinfects, and properly dries. Inserts new paper bag liner. Soiled bags shall be adequately sealed, collected in separate containers and disposed of in a trash dumpster.
- All School Entrances
- Sweeps porches daily.
- Picks up trash.
- Qashes windows weekly. (Exception: washes glass in front doors daily.)
- Windows
- Cleans windows, inside and outside, as needed.
- Water Fountains
- Scours and disinfects daily.
- Classrooms
- Make sure to empty the waste can. (Places trash in dumpsters outside buildings.)
- Removes all paper in the desk or on the floor.
- Checks under air-conditioning/heating units for paper and remove.
- Removes any trash or paper on shelves or in cabinets.
- Makes sure that floors are swept or mopped. It will be necessary to move the furniture as you clean. Give special attention to heard to get to areas such as corners.
- Using a wet cloth, make sure that the chalk troughs are properly cleaned. Also makes sure to wipe and clean shelves and window sills.
- Dusts each classroom daily.
- Vacuums carpets daily.
- Cleans doors and door glass daily.
- Properly stores all custodial equipment and supplies in a proper storage room.
- Secures school building before leaving.
- Locks all windows.
- Locks all doors.
- Utility Work
- Replaces light bulbs as needed inside and outside buildings and other small maintenance items.
- High Cleaning
- Cleans by dusting or vacuuming surfaces and objects in high areas. This includes the wall and ceiling areas. This includes the wall and ceiling area adjacent to ventilating and air-conditioning outlets.
- Reports hazardous conditions and items in need of repair.
- Turns off light, fans, heaters, etc., when not in use.
- Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to pass a written and physical test.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and community.
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks.
- Occasionally will lift and/or move up to 90lbs such as salt and bulk furniture.
- Will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors.
- The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment.
- The employee may work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays while performing the duties of this job.
- The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
