Candidates must be board certified. This faculty position will be full-time at the Associate or Full Professor level. The Department of Surgery consists of seven clinical divisions (General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Abdominal Transplant Surgery, Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery). It spans several different campuses, including Parnassus, Mission Bay, Mt. Zion, Bayfront Medical Building, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, the San Francisco VA Hospital, and Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland. Medical students rotate to these sites starting in their first year as well as to UCSF Fresno and UCSF East Bay campuses, and residents from UCSF East Bay rotate at the Parnassus campus of UCSF. We have ACGME residencies in General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Vascular Surgery. The Department has a clear reporting structure that includes this Vice Chair of Education position in all five pillars of UME, GME, Surgical skill and simulation, surgical education research, and faculty development. The ideal candidate will hold or have held a major educational leadership role in surgery such as Clerkship Director, Program Director, Simulation Center Director or VC of Education or equivalent. A strong history of scholarly activity in education research or curriculum design is expected. A background in fund-raising and endowment development is highly desirable. The VC will be responsible for strategy around Education for the Department, working together with the Chair, the doctorally prepared educator, and the leadership of our educational programs. In addition, the VC will need to work together with the VC for Faculty Affairs and Development around faculty mentorship for our learners and the educational continuum in professional development that extends from our students to our residents, fellows, and faculty. The VC will help the Chair to administrate the consolidated education budget for the Department. Furthermore, the VC for Education will oversee all preclinical and clinical courses at UCSF offered by Departmental faculty and collaborate with colleagues across the University and with the Academy of Medical Educators to position UCSF Surgery as an innovative leader in surgical Education locally and nationally.
