Job Description:
The shelter Veterinarian will be responsible for overseeing medical care of Home Fur Good’ s cats and dogs through their journey from intake to adoption, overseeing Home Fur Good’s onsite Vaccine and Dental Clinics, and providing leadership, direction and supervision to all members of the clinic staff. Due to the nature of the shelter setting, availability for consults and emergencies outside of working hours will be necessary.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Direct, coordinate and perform screening, diagnosis and basic and emergency medical treatment for our cats and dogs and develop plan of care for our rescues.
- Work closely with other staff to ensure all animals receive appropriate and timely medical care.
- Develop a comprehensive program of health care services for Home Fur Good and establish medical standards and procedures for the maintenance of healthy, safe and sanitary facility.
- Document standard operating procedures and protocols for the care of our animals. Be able to communicate these protocols to medical staff and shelter employees as needed.
- Develop a disease prevention program for the shelter.
- Supervise the daily monitoring of our cats and dogs residing in the adoptable area, and in isolation for signs of illness, injury and disease.
- Practice high quality shelter medicine with an emphasis on problem solving through physical examination and use of in-house diagnostics and treatments whenever possible.
- Prescribe medications as needed. Oversee administration of medications to our animals.
- Direct the ordering, maintenance and control of drugs, medical equipment and supplies used in the veterinary clinic.
- Maintain detailed medical records in Pet Point.
- Communicate with fosters, volunteers and prospective adopters whenever necessary.
- Have the ability to perform approximately 15 spay and neuters in a day.
- Have the ability to perform other surgeries and dentals under anesthesia.
- Delegate select administrative and Veterinary assistant duties, as needed.
Qualifications:
Must be currently licensed in the state of Arizona to practice veterinary medicine. DVM degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine. Must be qualified and eligible to obtain DEA license and premise license. Experience in high volume shelter medicine preferred. Minimum of 2 years of verifiable veterinary experience working in an animal shelter or public intake facility.
Must be able to perform soft tissue surgery including laceration repair, mass removal, enucleation and spay/neuter surgery.
Reports to Home Fur Good’s board of directors.
