The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC) a large publicly-owned wastewater treatment facility located in Newark, New Jersey, is currently seeking Instrumentation Technicians. Created in 1902, PVSC is the 5th largest facility of its kind in the United States, directly serving approximately 1.5 million residents in 48 municipalities located in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union Counties. The 140-acre plant is designed to treat an average of 330 million gallons per day (“mgd”) of wastewater, with an annual average flow of approximately 241 mgd. Position Summary: The Instrumentation Technician is responsible for the installation, testing, repair, inspection and maintenance of metering and recording instruments, controlling devices, data logging and display equipment, and communications and telemetry systems. Will provide maintenance support for the uninterrupted operation of essential instrumentation, controls and electrical equipment. Additional responsibilities will include the layout, installation, calibration and placing into service of new metering, controlling and recording devices, as well as calibrating as required. Education: High School or Vocational School Diploma is required. Experience: Level I – Minimum of six (6) years’ experience, plus two (2) years of formal training in the Instrumentation Field. Level II – Minimum of three (3) years’ experience, plus two (2) years of formal training in the Instrumentation Field. Level III - Minimum three (3) years performing progressive electronic or mechanical system tasks, along with the aptitude to learn, maintain and repair a wide variety of industrial instrumentation. Requirements: Ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position and carry out oral and written instructions. Must be available for emergencies and job assignments on a 24-hour basis. Must be able to read and interpret wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and specifications in making installations or performing major repair work. Must be able to troubleshoot telemetry, and Programmable Logic Control (PLC) hardware. Must have knowledge and experience in the installation and maintenance of liquid and gas flow metering and control equipment. Physical Demands: Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation to ensure the health and safety of oneself or others is maintained. Perform physical activities that require considerable use of the arms, legs, and the whole body such as climbing (including ladders), lifting up to 50 lbs., balancing, walking, stooping and handling heavy objects. Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into confined spaces while wearing proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as, but not limited to, canister and dust masks as well as SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus), in compliance with PVSC’s Facial Hair Grooming Policy. Working Conditions: Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and will be required to work indoors and outdoors.
