PURPOSE: The purpose of this position is to perform communicable disease nursing including food borne illness, infection control with hospitals, and clinic staff nursing. The work is performed under the direction of the Epidemiologist.

RESPONSIBILITES:

* Supervises public health functions in absence of supervisor. Maintains knowledge of different public health functions: WIC, Immunizations, Communicable Disease, Education, and STDs. * Receives, reviews, and processes communicable disease case reports. Determines appropriate course of action. * Investigates communicable disease cases to determine risk of spreading, source of illness and needed intervention. * Implements communicable disease outbreak control measures through agency and State Department of Health. * Conducts active disease surveillance program with communicable disease coordinator. * Conducts or works with epidemiology on active disease surveillance program. Conducts home visits as needed for tuberculosis and disease control. * Performs tuberculosis case management, assists obtaining patient medical care, monitors medication tolerance, obtains blood samples and screenings, determines patient compliance with physician instructions and provides patient and family education. * Conducts other home visits and follow-up visits as needed. Conducts risk assessments. Conducts initial patient interviews, obtains health histories, and assesses patient physical, mental an emotional well-being. * Refers patients to appropriate health care or social welfare agencies. Coordinates care for indigent patients with other agencies and social services. * Consults with medical care providers as needed regarding public health matters and to provide medical information and recommendations. * Collects and transports laboratory specimens, vaccines and other materials as assigned. * Trains student nurses in a variety of health care areas. * Cross train in other clinical areas such as the Health Services Clinic and Immunization clinic, and staff clinics as needed. * Maintains knowledge of health care and nursing issues; immunization procedures; communicable disease control; WIC regulations; State policies and community resources for indigent persons. * Creates, reviews and updates charts in electronic medical record systems for communicable disease investigations as well as clinical work. * Assesses supply needs. Unpacks and stores supplies. * Cleans equipment and lab. * Answers telephone calls. * Collects fees and issues receipts. * Prepares and submits statistical and summary reports.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education

* Associates degree * Nursing

Certifications

* Registered Nurse license * Valid motor vehicle operator's license required

Job Experience

* 3-5 years of experience * Three to five years Registered Nursing experience * Employment is contingent on successfully passing a full criminal background check.
