Founded in 2012, Portland Thorns FC have set the standard for fan support and on-field success in women's soccer since its inaugural 2013 season. One of the world's most supported women's soccer clubs, Portland has led the league in attendance for eight seasons and set a new club playoff attendance record last year with 25,218 fans supporting Thorns FC in the 2023 semifinal match at Providence Park.Thorns FC have won the NWSL Championship a league-record three times (2013, 2017, 2022) and finished as runners-up in 2018. The club has made the postseason a league-high nine times and has won the NWSL Shield in 2016 and 2021.

THE ROLE:
The Communications Manager is a pivotal role responsible for managing and executing various communication activities that contribute to the team's visibility, engagement, and overall success. This position plays a vital role in overseeing media relationships, content creation, and internal communication efforts. The ideal candidate is a skilled communicator with a passion for soccer and a strong commitment to elevating the team's communication strategy.
WHAT YOU'LL BE UP TO:
Media Management: Oversee all aspects of media interactions, interviews, and press conferences. Moderate press conferences Serve as a primary liaison for media inquiries and maintain strong relationships with sports journalists. Lead the preparation and distribution of press releases and media materials.
Closely monitor media landscape and social media, assisting with distribution of press clippings to senior management. Support VP of Communications in all aspects of corporate communications Content Development:
Collaborate with the marketing team on storytelling of players and club, both on and off the pitch. Work with marketing and social media team members on the creation of captivating content, including match previews, recaps, feature articles, and engaging social media updates. Ensure content accuracy and relevance across team's website in conjunction with Web Coordinator. Pitch feature stories to journalists, focusing on off field (corporate) opportunities. Media Guide development and creation. Internal Communication:
Develop and implement internal communication plans to keep players, staff, and team members informed and motivated. Oversee internal communication channels, including newsletters, meetings, and digital platforms. Collaborate with various departments to maintain consistent messaging and alignment with team objectives. Primary communications stakeholder for community relations efforts. Game Day Coordination:
Manage all aspects of game day communication activities, including press box operations, media credentialing, and post-match interviews. Facilitate real-time updates and media access during matches. Play a key role in post-game press conferences and interviews. Stakeholder Engagement:
Contribute to building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, such as media, sponsors, supporters' groups, and community organizations. Assist in executing communication campaigns targeting specific stakeholder groups. Crisis Communication Support:
Provide essential support in implementing crisis communication plans and protocols tailored to thesports industry. Assist in ensuring effective and transparent communication during critical situations. WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A THORN:
Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field. 3-5 years of relevant experience in communications, preferably with exposure to sports communication. Ability to travel with the team to all away games and other team functions as assigned. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an unwavering attention to detail. Proficiency in digital and social media platforms. Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment, especially during events and game days. Exceptional interpersonal skills and the capability to build positive relationships with media professionals, players, and staff. Soccer knowledge and a genuine passion for the sport are highly desirable. Strong creative problem-solving skills. Adaptability to changing circumstances and priorities.
