General Purpose:
Collects and prepares blood and non-blood specimens from patients for reference laboratory dispatch and testing. Performs skin tests and bleeding times. Accessions specimens into the laboratory.
Essential Functions:
* Collects laboratory specimens to include venipuncture, and capillary punctures for routine analysis, drug screens, and microbiology specimens.
* Performs and reports bleeding times and skin tests, entering the results into the computer/record.
* Labels specimens accurately, legibly, and completely.
* Relays clear concise collection instructions for the patient collection of specimens while fully understanding and following state and federal requirements.
* Prepares and stains blood smears and other specimens according to the specifications of the test to be performed.
* Processes data for productivity, outcomes and quality improvement purposes, etc.
* Performs screening tests and reports results, i.e. glucose tests, bleeding time tests, quality control tests.
* Handles telephone inquiries regarding laboratory results, records requests for blood collections, and answers general questions concerning test orders and collections.
* Completes other assignments as requested and assigned.
* May have access to personal health information ( PHI ) necessary to fulfill the above duties and responsibilities. Access to use and ability to disclose PHI is further defined by each organization/department.
Minimum Requirements:
* High School Diploma or equivalent, plus six (6) months of general phlebotomy experience to include venipuncture and capillary collections on adults and children.
* Preferred: Certification as an American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Certification Agency (NCA) phlebotomist.
* Able to provide proof of a current Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support (BLS) training for infants, children and adults.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
* High degree of accuracy required for specimen collection, centrifuge, blood collection devices, computer, and communication
* Ability to make decisions when problems with patients arise (example: redraw, call nurse, or physician).
* Ability to effectively communicate with clinical and non-clinical staff and individuals.
* Able to provide proof of valid driver's license, if applicable.
* Able to provide proof of valid auto liability insurance if assignment(s) include driving own vehicle.
* Meets applicable health requirements to provide patient care.
