Position Summary:
Under the leadership of the Manager, Clinical Laboratory, the Phlebotomist - Certified is an active member of the department that provides pathology and laboratory studies and analysis for the medical and nursing staff. The Phlebotomist - Certified is responsible for the collection of blood samples from patients by venipuncture or micro techniques. The Phlebotomist facilitates the collection and transportation of laboratory specimens.
Basic Qualifications:
Requires a high school diploma or a GED state certification and the completion of a Phlebotomy program.
Experience:
Requires up to one year of work-related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Requires current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS). (If BLS verification is not current upon hire, it must be obtained within three (3) months of hire.)

Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing logs and resolves discrepancies.
- Verifies patient identification with two unique identifiers.
- Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks.
- Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures and observing isolation procedures.
- Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring assays by working with the nursing staff to ensure appropriate drug dose to collection time.
- Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection. Maintains daily tallies of collections performed.
- Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedules.
- Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist or nursing station.
- Complies with all safety and infection control policies and practices.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
