Job Summary and Qualifications
Under the general supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services, the Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood samples using venipuncture or skin techniques and obtaining other specimens for ordered diagnostic studies. Performs clerical functions such as charting and filing reports.
What you will do in this role:
- Performs required charting rounds for laboratory services. Deliver reports to designated location.
- Maintains the computer terminal and the laboratory computer label printers.
- Prints outstanding reports regularly during the shift and at the end of each shift. Determines if a specimen was missed and arranges for the drawing of the specimen.
- Performs and reports any assigned Point of Care Testing processes.
- Prints outpatient reports and mails or delivers to physician offices.
- Knowledgeable of computer functions and able to add or cancel a test. Is able to find specimen requirements or send-out information in the system.
- Proficient in processing send-out specimens.
- Perform nightly computer functions as necessary according to job duties.
- Assists in data collection for statistical surveys or other reports generated by the Department.
- Participates in quality control and performance improvement activities within the Department.
- Facilitates communication between the Laboratory and members of the Medical Staff and other Hospital Departments to enhance patient care services.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Laboratory Services or designee.
- Utilizes specialized knowledge and skills in the collection of laboratory samples.
- Utilizes specialized knowledge and skills in performing general duties
- In collaboration with the Director of Laboratory Services or designee determines supplies required for provision of services and maintains adequate inventory.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to collect specimens from patients serviced in relation to growth and development over the life span to identify their requirements relative to age-specific needs.
- Utilizes appropriate principles in the provision of direct patient care services.
- Proficient in techniques for obtaining blood from hard to stick patients and obtaining samples with special requirements.
- Communicates effectively with patients, physicians, personnel, and other personnel in the hospital to fulfill position responsibilities.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the location and use of all safety equipment and MSDS's in the Department.
- Bases decision-making on sound principles related to cost containment in the Department (i.e. does not waste reagents, supplies or controls).
What qualifications you will need:
- Previous experience as a Phlebotomist
- High School Graduate / GED
