The Phlebotomist is responsible for preparing specimens for laboratory testing and performing screening procedures. This role involves drawing quality blood samples while ensuring a positive and trusting environment for patients. The Phlebotomist aims to deliver efficient and compassionate care during the specimen collection process.
Key Responsibilities:
- Specimen Collection & Processing: Perform blood draws and other specimen collections (e.g., urine or fecal) as per established procedures. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to test orders.
- Patient Interaction: Greet patients in a courteous manner, explaining the venipuncture (blood draw) or specimen collection process in a clear and calm way to reduce patient anxiety.
- Documentation & Accuracy: Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, ensuring all test requisitions and labels are 100% accurate. Update patient information as required.
- Specimen Handling: Store specimens at the appropriate temperatures, ensure proper packaging for transport, and follow protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Technical Proficiency: Demonstrate proficiency in using straight and butterfly needles, adhering to proper collection methods, and processing specimens according to laboratory standards.
- Compliance: Understand and comply with OSHA, DEP, and other relevant regulations. Attend annual department training as required.
- Communication: Answer telephone inquiries, read laboratory results to assist in answering questions, and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED.
- Certification: Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (certification is required in states such as CA, LA, NV, and WA).
- Experience: Minimum of 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. 0-2 years of experience in phlebotomy is required.
- Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

- Patient Interaction: Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with patients both in person and over the phone.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to work independently with a high level of attention to detail.
