The Phlebotomist is responsible for preparing specimens for laboratory testing and performing screening standards.
This role focuses on drawing quality blood samples while fostering an atmosphere of trust and confidence for patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and complete decontamination procedures.
- Greet customers courteously and ensure a professional demeanor during all interactions.
- Collect specimens (e.g., blood, urine, fecal) according to established procedures while explaining the process clearly and courteously.
- Create a calm environment to reduce patient anxiety during the collection process.
- Demonstrate proficiency with straight and butterfly needle techniques.
- Follow laboratory requisition forms and accurately label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
- Verify test requisitions or computer labels against orders for 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens securely for transport, maintaining required temperature and integrity.
- Adhere to proper collection methods and processing protocols for all specimens.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings and stay updated on procedural requirements.
- Respond to inquiries via telephone and provide laboratory results as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (required in CA, LA, NV, and WA).
- At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- 0-2 years of overall experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong patient interaction skills, both in person and over the phone.
- Attention to detail with the ability to work independently.
Certifications
- Phlebotomy certification as required by state regulations.
