Job Description:

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, University of Chicago Medicine, as a Vascular Access Phlebotomist in the Nursing Inpatient Phlebotomy department. Here, you will be responsible for drawing blood and IV placement at UChicago Medicine under minimal supervision. The phlebotomist will verify orders, generate specimen collection labels, and confirm patient identity prior to specimen collection. At UChicago Medicine, we provide state-of-the-art care for conditions of the blood vessels and lymphatic system. Our experts treat all vascular conditions, offering non-surgical, minimally invasive and traditional surgical options to deliver the highest level of patient care. This department is the Nursing Inpatient Phlebotomy department. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

The Vascular Access/Phlebotomy Technician is responsible for drawing blood from inpatients and starting peripheral IVs as needed on patients in various locations under minimal supervision. Includes patient and order verification and generation of specimen collection labels.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs venipuncture and skin punctures with expertise and in a customer service-oriented fashion, adhering to all established policies and procedures
  • Properly packages specimens for delivery through the pneumatic tube system
  • Stocks blood drawing carts and keep cart and area clean, safe, and sterile
  • Use of handheld system to identify patients, indicate specimen collection status and generate specimen collection labels
  • Stocks blood drawing area and keeps areas clean, safe, and sterile
  • Plans the delivery of IV access for patients in coordination with the healthcare team
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Must have current CPR training recognized by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and perform a variety of patient assistance without direct supervision
  • Ability to interact effectively with patients, clinical staff, and the general public
  • Phlebotomy qualification would include one of the following:
  • C.N.A. with phlebotomy certification
  • M.A. with phlebotomy certification
  • EMT-B
  • EMT-P

Preferred Qualifications

  • IV insertion and IV certification
  • IV access with Ultrasound trained
  • Training in phlebotomy from an accredited program

  • One-two years of practical experience with references

  • Thorough knowledge of asepsis; manual dexterity and accuracy

  • Ability to follow directions and established procedures with attention to detail

  • Demonstrate ability to utilize institutional computer systems

  • Demonstrate ability to interact effectively with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare workers

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required

  • Shift: Night Shift (10:00 pm - 6:30 am) Monday - Friday, Every other Weekend/Holiday

In this role, we anticipate that you will generally work approximately 40 hours per week. We anticipate that you will generally be scheduled to work the Night Shift, from approximately 10:00pm - 6:30am and will not be scheduled for on-call shifts. We anticipate you will be scheduled to work 100% at the Hyde Park campus. The days of the week that you are scheduled will vary depending on the week, but we anticipate that you will be scheduled to work on weekends (Saturday and/or Sunday) only every other week.
