SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Heavy Equipment Operator & Mechanic is responsible for operating and maintaining various types of heavy machinery, such as bulldozers, excavators, offroad haul trucks, and skid steers. This dual role position requires both skilled operation of equipment and mechanical expertise to ensure the machines are in optimal working condition.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Heavy Equipment operations:
- Safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment including bulldozers, excavators, offroad haul trucks, and skid steers.
- Prepare construction site by digging trenches, leveling ground, and moving materials.
- Load and unload materials such as soil, sand, gravel, and debris using machinery.
- Adhere to all safety regulations and guidelines to prevent accidents and injuries on the job site.
- Conduct pre-operation inspections to ensure equipment is in safe working condition and report any issues.
Maintenance and Repair:
- Conduct regular inspections and preventative maintenance on heavy equipment or identify issues.
- Troubleshoot mechanical problems and perform necessary repairs on engines, hydraulics, and other systems.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment and performing mechanic repairs.
- OSHA 10 of higher construction training preferred
- HAZWOPER 40
- Forklift certification preferred
- Experience operating hydraulic attachments
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Coordination: Ability to coordinate your actions with those of other workers on busy construction sites
- Attendance: Ability to complete work projects on time and in an effective manner; regular and prompt attendance are an essential job function
- Working Conditions: Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, dust, rain, pollution and toxic atmospheres
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Ability to wear required PPE, including respirator, and participate in OSHA-required medical surveillance programs as necessary
- Lifting: Ability to pick up construction debris and able to lift 50 lbs. regularly and heavier weights with the proper equipment
- Climbing: Ability to climb temporary or permanent stairs and ladders
- Regularly required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work
