JOB POSITION #222: STREETS HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

WORK LOCATION: MOC/Streets Division

HIRING RANGE: $17.2120 - $21.1707 Hour

PAY GRADE: G - Non-Exempt

TYPE OF POSITION: Regular/Full-Time

DAYS WORKED: Monday - Friday

HOURS WORKED: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

JOB DUTIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Performs concrete work, including removal of existing concrete and preparing area for new concrete, finishing sidewalks, curbs, gutters, planters, stairs, handicap ramps, storm drain inlets, retaining walls, stamped colored concrete and driveway entrances.

Operates a variety of equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance and repair activities; performs a variety of semi‑skilled tasks in the maintenance of streets, parking lots, alleys, right-of-ways, city property, and storm drainage systems.

Works under the close supervision of the streets foreman.

Operates various heavy and light equipment in the maintenance and new construction of city projects such as preparing/paving/patching streets and parking lots, blading roads and ditches, removing and/or installing culverts, tearing down houses and clearing property, clearing weeds of road side, flattening dump piles at sweeper dump sites; removing curbs, gutters, sidewalks and concrete structures; digging ditches for installation of storm drain pipes.

Performs asphalt work including sub grade preparation, road base installation and paving. Works with hot and cold asphalt. Patches, Paving, Pothole repair.

Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.

Operates steel wheel rollers, rubber tire rollers, crack sealing machine, loaders, water trucks and similar equipment. Road Graders, Dozers, Excavators, Backhoe, Lay Down Machine, and Dump Truck.

Operates snow removal equipment.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Performs carpentry work, including building wood and steel forms for headwall storm drain inlets, manhole covers, retaining walls, planters, spillways, handicap ramps and stairs.

Removes snow off streets, parking lots; sands icy streets.

Cleans weeds, trash and other debris from work site.

Provides minor equipment maintenance inspections such as greasing, checking oil, transmission fluid and water.

Controls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or assigned.

Operates jack-hammers, vibrating skid plate tampers, chain saws, weed eaters, hand picks, shovels, brooms, rakes, pitch forks, pruners and other miscellaneous hand tools.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City of Farmington's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy which includes: pre employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.

This position requires a baseline audiometric examination.

Extensive background checks required.

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with acceptable driving record for the past three years required, and the ability to obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License.

Ability to operate all types of heavy equipment for specific job site requirements with a minimum of four (4) years experience operating equipment such as a front end loader, D-7 dozer, excavators, road grader, Bobcat loader, backhoe, steel/rubber wheel roller, tamper, laydown machine, dump, lowboy, salt and water trucks, and street sweepers.

Ability to operate other equipment such as crack sealing machine, crack router, air compressor, jackhammer, chain saw and various power tools.

Ability to read blueprints and an engineer's tape measure.

Working knowledge and ability to do minor equipment maintenance inspections.

Knowledge of pipe and guard rail installations.

Ability and knowledge to do asphalt work, including subgrade preparation, road base installation and paving.

Ability to do manual labor such as shoveling and using a pick.

Ability and knowledge of carpentry to construct wood and steel forms.

Ability and knowledge of concrete work.

Availability to be on 24 hours call to respond to emergencies. Must be at Municipal Operations Center within 30 minutes after receiving call. Requires telephone at residence for on call status.

Ability to establish and maintain harmonious work relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other city department personnel and the public.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

Works with asphalt, crack sealing material, concrete, salt, liquid calcium chloride, liquid magnesium chloride, oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, herbicides, paint, traffic control signs, trash, weeds, tree limbs, dirt rock, sand and gravel.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
