General Statement of Duties
An employee in this class operates heavy equipment to load solid waste into trailers, packing the waste down, leveling the trailer, and covering the waste. Operation of the equipment at the Transfer station, work includes maintaining the work area and managing the storage areas with emphasis on the variety of solid waste materials delivered. Work includes performing preventative maintenance of equipment. Employees perform work in accordance with established safety rules and regulations. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Solid Waste Director and Supervisor and is reviewed in progress and upon completion for adherence to standards.
Duties and Responsibilities/Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of medium to heavy equipment such as loader, compactor and large trucks.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of assigned equipment.
Ability to operate equipment safely in all types of weather and conditions, and sometimes in limited space.
Ability to perform preventative maintenance on equipment.
Ability to use tact and diplomacy with the public, especially in sensitive problem situations.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to keep simple records of work activity.
Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public.
Operates large solid waste equipment to load and pack trailers for solid waste coming in for transfer from various industries and from citizens' homes.
Operates equipment to load solid waste into trailers, packs waste in trailers or other containers, covers and moves trailers; cleans up around solid waste transfer site.
Performs daily routine maintenance on equipment; checks and adds water, oil, DEF and transmission fluid; greases fittings as needed.
Checks each collection areas daily, organized by content, and removes contaminants as necessary according to set standards.
Maintains work area; levels and cleans grounds; cleans around the equipment; picks up scattered debris.
Shows the public where to dump waste, monitors customer delivery for compliance with dumping standards and customer safety. Also monitors customers for compliance of materials and also paying for those loads that should be charged due to operating procedures.
Assists other landfill staff as needed in other operations when assistance is required.
Cleans all equipment on a routine basis. Uses a water hose each day and a pressure washer one time per month.
Checks equipment daily; completes reports on status and reports needed repairs.
Maintains all recycling and waste piles.
Worker is required to work a varied schedule to include holidays.
Performs related duties as required to complete the work at the Transfer Station, Yard Waste pile, and Scrap Metal and Tire Recycling areas.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Desirable Education and Experience
High school diploma and some experience in the operation of motorized vehicles assigned including but not limited to a yard tractor, excavator or other similar heavy equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid North Carolina's driver's licenses and may be required to possess a Class A or B CDL upon hire for operation of commercial trucks for transportation of roll off containers.
Franklin County offers a 457 (Deferred Comp) Plan for employees to elect voluntary participation on a pre-tax basis.
