We are seeking an enthusiastic Instructional Specialist - Heavy Equipment Operator who is passionate about cultivating the school's mission and objectives through student instruction, guidance and review in order to ensure successful development of each student. Because of our commitment to community, employment preference is given to residents who live in WV and the New River Community Technical College service area.
This position is a Full-time position (Monday-Friday) for the Ghent Campus and will report directly to the Dean of Workforce Technical and Community Education. The position will work collaboratively with management, faculty and staff within the department and college to serve the best interests of the students.
Job Summary
The college instructor teaches in discipline areas in which he or she has specific training and competence. The instructor is expected to plan, organize, and teach in a manner that encourages development in harmony with the school's mission and values. He or she also promotes and directs successful student learning in keeping with the learning-centered values and goals of the school.
The Instructional Specialist will be directly responsible to the Dean of Workforce, Technical and Community Education Programs. Some authority of the Dean will be delegated to the Department Chairperson with whom the instructor will work cooperatively in the best interest of the college and its students.
Nature of Work
Responsibilities for the role of Heavy Equipment Operator Instructor include:
- Providing guidance and mentorship to students interested in pursuing careers in heavy equipment operation.
- Engaging in recruitment efforts to attract prospective students to the Heavy Equipment Operator Training Program.
- Implementing strategies for student retention and success within the program.
- Engaging in ongoing professional development to stay current with advancements in heavy equipment operation.
- Contributing to the college and local community through service initiatives.
- Active participation in committee activities related to the Heavy Equipment Operator Training Program.
- Design, assess, and deliver the curriculum to ensure alignment with industry standards and best practices.
- Additional responsibilities as assigned by the academic dean.
Specific tasks include:
- Delivering instruction in the Heavy Equipment Operator Training Program, focusing on hands-on learning experiences.
- Teaching practical skills such as equipment operation techniques, safety procedures, and maintenance protocols for heavy machinery.
- Utilizing equipment simulator training modules to enhance student learning.
- Supervising students during practical exercises, including maneuvering and operational tasks.
- Providing on-site training in various work environments, including construction sites and industrial settings.
- Conducting classroom sessions to supplement practical training with theoretical knowledge.
- Evaluating student performance and providing constructive feedback.
- Ensuring the proper maintenance and safety of equipment used in the Heavy Equipment Operator Training Program.
This role requires a comprehensive understanding of heavy equipment operation, strong instructional skills, and a dedication to fostering the development of future heavy equipment operators.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Performs other functions as required or assigned. Also complies with all Policies and Standards.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Develop syllabi that clearly outline the course requirements, rationale, goals, and objectives.
- Select textbooks and other resources for the class.
- Prepares class sessions and assignments to help students grasp course content and how it integrates with overall student learning outcomes for the course.
- Teaches courses according to the catalog descriptions and following defined course standards and outcomes.
- Creates a learning environment that encourages student involvement and participation.
- Documents students attendance, participation, and academic progress by giving and grading assignments, projects, quizzes, and/or examinations that lead to a final grade.
- Submits course grades to the Registrar by the assigned date.
- Is accessible to students outside the classroom, providing ample periods for counseling and mentoring students in matters related to academic success, goals, and development.
- When called upon, functions as an official academic advisor, counseling students about course, academic sequence, and program selections.
- Maintains and disseminates current information on services available to students throughout the school.
- Develops and administers pre and post-tests for each class taught, submitting results to the supervisor as requested at the end of each semester.
- Participates in and contributes to curriculum development by planning, developing, and evaluating new and existing courses and curricula.
- Participates in the development and implementation of academic policies, guiding principles, objectives, and functions per the philosophy of the school.
- Participates in faculty meetings and staff meetings, serves on committees, and participates in other activities and Commencement Exercises.
- Is familiar with and maintains behavior and actions consistent with school policies.
- Continues professional development and growth according to personal needs and certification requirements.
- Make sure that student evaluations are administered near the end of each semester.
- Performs other responsibilities requested by the supervisor.
- Represents the school positively to prospective students and supporters.
The position may require travel between campuses.

Academic Requirements:
Vocational/Workforce instructors must possess a minimum of an associate degree in their teaching field from an accredited institution or as required a valid licensure in that field. Instructors may be assigned to courses in which they possess a combination of educational and practical experience.
Experience
In addition to the knowledge/education, the following related work experience is typically required, for this position. An equivalent combination of education and recent, related experience may be acceptable.
Heavy Equipment Operator - A demonstrated experience of heavy equipment operator experience of five (5) years. - Required.
License or Certification
Valid Class A-Commercial Driver License (CDL) clear of air brake restricting and clear driving record - Preferred
Associate degree or equivalent plus five (5) years of experience in the diesel industry.
or
High School/GED or equivalent plus seven (7) years of experience in the industry. - Required
