What does a Heavy Equipment Operator/Blaster I or II do for us? They perform assignments operating a variety of heavy construction equipment at various locations system wide. They use drilling equipment and explosives, as well as blast holes for power line poles, towers, and trenches. They perform other construction related groundwork when equipment is not in use. A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE Knowledge of: + Functions, operations, and care of common construction equipment + Hazards and safety precautions of the specific type of work + The safe use and handling of explosives + Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules applicable to motor vehicle and equipment operations Preferred: + Underground utility installation Skills in: + Verbal and written communication + Maintaining neat, accurate, and legible records + Basic math and use of personal computers Ability to: + Work under direct or self-directed supervision + Establish effective working relationships + Work with different foremen and crews + Perform minor mechanical maintenance and repairs to equipment + Perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks to assist teams + Work overtime at the discretion of the supervisor and respond to emergencies outside of normal working hours + Attend classes to update knowledge of regulations governing the use of explosives + Travel throughout Idaho Power Company's territory for extended periods of time MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Blaster I Education: + High school diploma or GED Experience: + 2 or more years demonstrated heavy equipment operation experience using backhoes, semi-tractors, pintle-hitch trailers, excavators and bulldozers Preferred: + 1 year of experience working with explosives or an equivalent combination of appropriate training and experience which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities Licenses & Certifications: + Valid Class A CDL driver's license with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position + Valid Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card or ability to obtain prior to hire + HazMat endorsements or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire + Valid First Aid/CPR card within 90 days of hire Blaster II Education: + High school diploma or GED Experience: + 3 or more years demonstrated heavy equipment experience using backhoes, semi tractors, pintle hitch trailers, excavators, and bulldozers and 1 year of experience working with explosives OR + An equivalent combination of appropriate training and experience which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities Licenses & Certifications: + Valid Class A CDL driver's license with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position + Valid DOT Medical Card or ability to obtain prior to hire + HazMat endorsement or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire + Valid First Aid/CPR card within 90 days of hire + Crane operation card PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This position lifts/carries up to 150 lbs. (75 lbs. in each hand) occasionally and 50-75 lbs. frequently to knuckle height. Lifting of up to 120 lbs. to shoulder height/overhead is required occasionally. Carrying is required up to 150 feet on ascents, descents, uneven, and sometimes loose terrain. Climbing of 8-foot ladders and onto/from trucks/trailers/heavy equipment is required. Drilling/packing off steep surfaces/rock faces is performed up to several times yearly while wearing safety fall restraints. Pushing up to 130 lbs. and pulling up to 110 lbs. is required occasionally. Hand tools are used, and attachment of blasting caps requires good manual dexterity. Shoveling is required to place stemming into 5-gallon buckets and to dig around utilities. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical evaluation for the DOT medical certificate. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Extensive overnight service territory travel for extended periods of time will be required, at times with little to no notice. Must be able to respond to emergencies in excess of normal working hours. Works overtime at the discretion of the supervisor. Works a hitch schedule consisting of eight days on and six days off with the potential to switch to four ten hour shifts at the foreman's discretion. The successful candidate is able to live anywhere across Central, Southern, or Eastern Idaho, but must be able to report to the Twin Falls Operations Center . On-the-job training will be an intricate part of the blasting portion of this position. Complete an Employee Possessor Questionnaire form within 30 days of hire to be submitted and approved by the Bureau of ATF&E as a Possessor of Explosives.
