The Utilities team of the Community Services Department is seeking a responsible individual to join their team! Work involves responsibility for the safe, highly-skilled and efficient operation of heavy motorized equipment used in water & sewer utilities construction and maintenance activities including excavators, bulldozers, mechanized rollers, snow removal equipment, loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, and similar types of heavy equipment.
This is a full-time, 40 hour per week, non-exempt position. $25.45 to $36.85 per hour. Position is open until filled.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Except as specifically noted, the following functions are considered essential to this position. The listed examples may not include all duties found in this class):
- Operates heavy excavation equipment for installation and repair of water mains or sewer lines, including highly-skilled operation around buried utility lines such as fiber, natural gas, and telecoms; can safely operate in and around workers located within trench shoring boxes; can operate to properly set and adjust trench shoring boxes.
- Must be capable of setting and calibrating lasers for proper installation of gravity piping, with proficient skill in operating excavation equipment to set proper grade.
- Operates various equipment in support of water & sewer utilities construction or maintenance activities; loading or unloading materials, debris and equipment; operation of high-pressured flusher/vactor truck; operation of mechanical sewer rodder; excavation and road repair and maintenance work; and repair and maintenance of City facilities and equipment.
- Coordinates the activities of a work crew in the absence of a supervisor; enters employee work information into database in the absence of a supervisor.
- Responsible for marking excavation sites for Dig-Safe marks, either pre-construction for City projects, or for marking City utilities for private contractors.
- May aid Highway Department with operation of street sweepers or roadside mowing equipment.
- Service equipment and make minor field repairs; report need for major repair to supervisor and mechanics.
- As assigned, direct the work of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled workers involved in routine maintenance and construction activities related to public works and utilities field operations.
- Operate vehicles in such a manner as to maintain the mechanical and structural integrity of assigned vehicles and in compliance with all laws, ordinances, policies and procedures at all times.
- Prepare and operate equipment, on an emergency and seasonal basis, for snow removal and other seasonal clean up operations.
- Perform various semi-skilled tasks essential to department and city operations when not engaged in heavy equipment operations.
- Knowledge of the maintenance requirements, work hazards, safety practices and traffic laws relating to heavy equipment operation.
- Maintains availability when requested to meet emergency situations.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with employees, other departments and agencies, and the general public.
- Maintains familiarity with and executes safe work procedures associated with assigned work.
- Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS: Demonstrated highly-skilled operation of excavation equipment in close proximity to traveling public, buried utilities and City staff. Knowledge of the functions, operating methods and care required of the heavy equipment used in public works and utilities projects. Knowledge of the maintenance requirements of heavy equipment and to detect equipment deficiencies and make necessary operational adjustments. Knowledge of the work hazards, safety practices and traffic laws relating to heavy equipment operation. Ability to understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions. Sufficient physical strength, conditioning and agility to perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods of time under varying weather and climactic conditions. Ability to read construction plans and direct work crews.
EDUCATION/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: High School diploma or equivalent. At least five (5) years' experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy construction and maintenance equipment OR an equivalent combination of education and experience, which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position. Must maintain valid New Hampshire CDL A with Air Brake Endorsement and Tanker Endorsement. Must maintain complete certification for NE Collection Systems Operator Certificate Grade II and State of NH Water Distribution Certification Grade II.
