General Summary of the Position:
Operate a variety of heavy equipment utilized in the construction, maintenance and repair of water and wastewater infrastructure, pipes, lift stations, and plant facilities.
Essential Functions:
- Operate heavy equipment, backhoe and mini excavators.
- Properly follow company and OSHA safety procedures. Bring problems to the attention of the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Manager or HR Manager.
- Follow Daily Procedures & Protocols as set forth in job orientations and trainings.
- Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or needed repairs to supervisor; clean equipment.
- Assist in the installation and maintenance of water and wastewater pipes, lift stations, and other infrastructure.
- Assist in obtaining required permits and identify underground utilities before starting work.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
- Considerable knowledge of heavy-equipment operating principles. Ability to drive and operate the equipment under varying working conditions.
- Working knowledge of methods, materials and tools used in water and wastewater repair and contruction work.
- Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations.
- Ability to perform manual work requiring periods of extensive physical exertion and potential exposure to adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to work from construction specifications or blueprints.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.
Physical Work Activities and Exposure:
Equipment Operators must have good eyesight and better than average coordination in order to operate both hand and foot levers simultaneously. Must have good judgment in order to perform complicated tasks and must be able to work closely with other workers without constant supervision. Skilled Equipment Operators are constantly alert and observant of their surroundings.
Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts.
Exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, vibration, dust and asphalt. Also exposure to wastewater.
Must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
- The noise level is usually loud.
- Frequent sitting, talking or hearing.
- Use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls.
- Reach with hands and arms.
- Walk short distances, sometimes over uneven terrain.
Qualifications:
- Two years of experience in operating heavy equipment; including a mini-excavator
- Two years of experience with installing/repairing water and sewer lines
- Possession of a valid state driver's license
