We are seeking an Engineering Manager (Space Hardware) to join the Space Systems Department to provide personnel and programmatic leadership alongside a technically focused staff of Directors. This individual will report directly to the Vice President, and oversee the management of personnel that design, build, test and operate cutting-edge satellite technology. As an Engineering Manager in the Space Systems Department at Umbra, you will have an opportunity to work with both hardware, software and product focused teams as well as the senior staff, to substantially impact the development of new technology and the personal growth of an extremely talented group of engineers. This position is located in our Santa Barbara office in order to collocate with the Space Hardware team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the personnel and guide programmatic efforts within the Space Hardware team as part of the Space Systems Department
  • Guide the professional development and career planning of Space Hardware engineers, taking into account inputs from technical leadership
  • Collaborate directly with project, product and technical leads to understand scope of work in order to ensure individuals are executing with high quality and velocity
  • Manage individuals in aspects such as but not limited to workload, assignment, support, development and conflict resolution
  • Conduct regular one on one meetings with your team as well as performance reviews
  • Ensure your team's compliance with legal regulations, security standards, and company policies
  • Represent your team needs and capacity in technical meetings and collaborate with architects to form well informed solutions
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness
  • Interface directly with the VP, Space Systems to coordinate and report on efforts across the Department
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders on headcount planning and hiring
  • Utilize agile practices to support sprint planning, track progress and manage and report individual performance
  • Other professional duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in personnel management
  • 3+ years of experience in project management
  • 3+ years of experience and/or direct exposure to hardware engineering
  • Experience with traditional project management practices and tools, such as critical path analysis, resource loading and MS Project
  • Experience with agile project management practices and tools, such as scrum, SAFe and Jira
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and support a team of engineers
  • Excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative, and dynamic environment

Desired Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in personnel management
  • 5+ years of experience in project management
  • 5+ years of experience and/or direct exposure to hardware engineering
  • Demonstrated expertise in applying Jira to hardware engineering
  • Degree in engineering or a related STEM field
  • Certifications in PMP (Project Management Professional), CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management), and/or CSM (Certified Scrum Master)
