Amazon Web Services (AWS) Hardware Engineering is a fast growing and leading-edge research and development team that creates enterprise compute and storage server designs for our innovative web service and e-commerce technology platforms. Our designs are industry-leading in terms of performance, frugality and operational excellence, and are critical to the success of the AWS business and the hundreds of thousands of customers who use utility computing today.

We are seeking an experienced Technical Program Manager (TPM) to define and build the next generation of our cloud servers. Our success depends on our highly respected server infrastructure; were handling massive scale and rapid integration of emergent technologies.

The ideal TPM candidate will be an experienced program manager who is skilled in managing hardware product development teams across several geographic regions using a variety of suppliers. The successful candidate will be an innovative self-starter and leader. The candidate will be familiar with the cloud computing industry and AWS offerings and will be passionate about providing the best possible customer experience at the best cost. The candidate will have an obsession with data and precise analysis and will use these as inputs to make decisions.

Key job responsibilities

You manage large, complex technology initiatives, delivering critical solutions, significant improvements, new mechanisms, or deprecating systems that are no longer needed.

You successfully manage all stages (from concept to delivery).

You work closely with your customers to understand their short and long term business goals and product needs.

You are responsible for the delivery of platforms through driving and coordinating the efforts of an interdisciplinary team across hardware design, component development, firmware, test, and qualification, along with external suppliers and design partners to develop, deploy at scale, and provide ongoing operational support for the servers you deliver.

You are actively involved in the sustaining operational health of the platforms you support

You understand the architecture of the systems you work with (e.g., workflows, APIs, runtime characteristics, design limitations, and maintenance requirements). You influence team technical priorities and business strategy through data-driven contributions.

You communicate ideas effectively, verbally and in writing, to a wide range of audiences including Directors and VPs. You foster a constructive dialogue, harmonize discordant views, and lead the resolution of contentious issues (build consensus). You partner successfully with customers, stakeholders, and engineering teams.

Your program management practices set a great example to others. You routinely and efficiently deliver the right things. You define clear goals and objectives. You drive crisp decisions in your program area about what projects move forward and in what priority order. You proactively identify risks and bring them to the attention of your team and stakeholders with plans for mitigation before they become roadblocks.

You are a simplifier. You judiciously add, refine, and remove procedures. By applying project management best practices, you increase the productivity and effectiveness of the teams you work with.

A day in the life

What you will do: As a TPM on the Edge Hardware Engineering team you will be responsible for leading AWS Outpost fleet operations and hardware product development programs in a highly cross-functional environment which includes internal customers, external vendors and technology partners. Youll provide leadership in the application of new technologies to large scale server deployments in a continuous effort to deliver a world-class customer experience at a world-class cost point. This is a fast-paced challenging position, and youll work with thought leaders in multiple technology areas. Youll have high standards for yourself and everyone you work with, and youll be constantly looking for ways to improve your products performance, quality and cost. Using data and key metrics, you will also drive and measure process improvements that enhance our operational effectiveness. You will work in a dynamic, challenging, and fast-changing organization. Basic Qualifications

- 5+ years of technical product or program management experience

- 7+ years of working directly with engineering teams experience

- 3+ years of software development experience

- 5+ years of technical program management working directly with software engineering teams experience

- Experience managing programs across cross functional teams, building processes and coordinating release schedules

Preferred Qualifications

- 5+ years of project management disciplines including scope, schedule, budget, quality, along with risk and critical path management experience

- Experience managing projects across cross functional teams, building sustainable processes and coordinating release schedules

- Experience defining KPI's/SLA's used to drive multi-million dollar businesses and reporting to senior leadership

- Experienced in overseeing and reviewing operational excellence metrics for projects post-launch

- Experience managing the lifecycle of a complex cross-functional program with considerable business impact

- Ability to apply critical thinking in complex situations; experience working in cross functional groups including mechanical Engineering, test, reliability, failure analysis

- Experienced in identifying and mitigating supply chain constraints

- Knowledge of compute and storage server architecture and design for large scale applications

- Experience in working with overseas CM/OEM/ODM/IHV vendors in product development

- Experience with server technologies such as: power optimization, board design, thermal, mechanical, BIOS, BMC, signal integrity, networking

- Experienced in gathering system requirements and working with support teams to aid in the creation of server specifications

- Inquisitive with technical and business skills to understand, test, and challenge while working harmoniously with the business and technology owners

- Demonstrated ability to engage technology providers in the industry to track and apply emerging technologies to innovative server designs

- A strong track record of executing in dynamic and fast-paced environments. Highly experienced with data-driven decision making

- Experienced maintaining high level of data security when working with external partners and customers by driving customer engagement plans through proper legal team workstreams

- Comfortable working on multiple programs at once

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $133,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $231,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
