Job Title: HR Director

Location (city, state): Hybrid - Washington, D.C. (1-2 days onsite)

Pay: $50–$55/hour

Type: Contract (3 months)

An independent watchdog organization supporting the expansion of global freedom and democracy. The organization is undergoing significant internal changes, including leadership transitions and a new collective bargaining agreement, presenting opportunities for impact during a critical period.


Job Description:

The HR Director will play a hands-on, generalist role, managing day-to-day HR functions during a transitional period. The position requires strong experience in union and labor relations, employee relations, investigations, and change management. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic HR professional to join an organization in flux and support key HR processes.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee core HR functions, including employee relations, labor relations, benefits, recruiting, investigations, and compensation changes.
  • Manage updates and implementation related to a new collective bargaining agreement (signed November 1).
  • Support internal investigations and performance management.
  • Collaborate with specialists in areas such as DEI, payroll, benefits, and talent development.
  • Ensure continuity and smooth HR operations during leadership and organizational transitions.

Qualifications:

  • Experience:
    • 8–10 years of HR management experience, with strong expertise in union and labor relations.
    • Proven track record of navigating organizational change and managing chaotic transitions.
    • Experience in an international NGO or non-profit environment preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and HRIS systems (Paychex, JAMIS).
    • Strong implementation and communication skills.
    • Ability to adapt and provide solutions in a dynamic, evolving environment.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree preferred.
