Job Description
Northern Iron and Machine is looking for a Human Resource Generalist.
This position provides guidance and support in a variety of areas to include benefits, wellness, employee relations, recruitment, compensation, and training. This position is responsible for effective hiring of qualified applicants for their location through recruiting, interviewing and other pre-employment requirements.
The HR Generalist recommends policy, counsels employees and supervisors in regard to policy and applicable laws, and administers all company benefit and wellness programs for their location.
Essential Functions:
- Coordinates and facilitates the effective hiring of qualified applicants for production and skilled labor positions by screening, interviewing, coordinating candidates for onsite interviews. Facilitates other staffing activities such as orientation, placement, training, and performance evaluation.
- Manages the administration of all company benefit programs including health, dental, vision, life, short and long term disability, worker compensation, COBRA and FMLA
- Provides support and assistance to all employees regarding benefit issues and concerns. Facilitates effective benefit orientation programs for new and existing employees by educating and familiarizing employees in benefit plans, policies and procedures.
- Provides support in benefit plan renewal and implementation. Facilitates accurate enrollment of all participants (employees, COBRA participants and retired personnel) and ensures appropriate documentation and communication of all plan options.
- Ensure that workers compensation claims and unemployment claims are properly administered; help represent the company in administrative hearings on workers compensation and unemployment as necessary.
- Provides direction and support to Supervisory staff regarding application of labor laws and company policies regarding employee discipline/corrective actions and other aspects of the fair, firm, and consistent approach to HR management.
- Coordinates employee separation communications and related documentation and conducts exit interviews.
- Ensures HR related data, HRIS systems and programs are properly maintained and administered.
- Maintains employee data within all HRIS systems and compiles reports as needed.
- In conjunction with the Training Department, coordinate new hire notices, orientations, paperwork, regulatory reporting & benefit enrollment.
- Answers inquiries and provides information to employees and authorized agencies or persons; maintains confidentiality of data.
- Coordinates and participate in special events programs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications & Competencies:
- Thorough understanding and ability to apply federal, state and local regulations related to personnel issues (benefits, wages, ADA, FMLA, OSHA, etc.)
- Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
- Strong time and project management skills; well developed sense of urgency
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft and related software
- Strong planning and organizational skills
- Team-oriented, ethical, credible, and trustworthy

Skills & Experience
Education
- High School Diploma required, degree in Human Resources or related field preferred
Experience
- Five or more years HR experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment
- Two or more years experience in recruiting, preferably in a manufacturing environment using ATS and job boards
- Human Resources Certification (PHR or SPHR) preferred
Computer
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft and related software, Strong Excel skills
- Certifications & Licenses
As a salaried employee, you will be expected to dedicate 100% of your professional efforts to your position with NIM - Lawton Standard. As in any business, the time required to fulfill your responsibilities will vary from week to week, depending on the demands of the business and your personal schedule. With that in mind, over the long-term, salaried professionals are expected to work an average of 50 hours per week, with some weeks above that level and some below it.
