The Retail Cashier role is important to delivering outstanding customer service, treating all donations as treasures, maintaining a clean, organized facility, and always communicating respectfully between coworkers and customers.
You have a direct impact on the success of your store, which in turn affects the success and outcomes of our Programs and Mission Department. Your Successful completion of all job responsibilities directly impacts all team members in the store, the leadership team, your direct supervisor, customers, donors, and participants.
- Outstanding customer service:
- Greet every customer as they enter the building, this can be as simple as a smile or wave, if able verbally, acknowledge.
- Offer to assist customers, when not running transactions.
- Understand store floor plan to accurately direct customers. When able, walk to desired location.
- Be friendly but aware of time spent with each customer, do not engage in personal conversations.
- If line at register has more than 3 customers or if a customer has a concern or question you are not sure of, page for immediate assistance of backup cashier/manager.
- Never become confrontational.
- Pay careful attention when handling customer purchases, be gentle and respectful with items. Use paper to wrap breakables, double bag as needed or ask for a box from back. When handling textiles, gently place in bag when scanning item.
- Thank and invite back all customers, if someone leaves without a purchase, thank them as well and invite back.
- Accurate cash handling:
- At start of shift, count drawer, write date and cashier initials on tape from adding machine and place in drawer before signing out from cashier tracking form.
- With lid locked, place in POS (Point of sale) assigned.
- Count back change with every transaction, leaving customer cash on top of drawer till change is verified and counted back to customer. Give receipt, offer blue card, and ALWAYS ask for round up.
- When icon pops up to have a cash drop, notify manager on duty and follow procedure.
- When shift ends, manager will pull tape, lock lid on drawer and proceed to cash office.
- Count drawer down, have management verify, and sign appropriate tracker.
- If cash does not balance, manager will fill out an investigation form and send it to HR/Finance.
- Maintain safety & security measures:
- At end of each shift, complete 5-minute drill, ensuring cash area is organized, stocked, and clean for next shift.
- Report any incidents of unsafe working conditions immediately to manager on duty.
- Report any tag discrepancies, missing tags, or no tags to manager on duty at once.
- Follow through with all state and federal health regulations and company safety policy and procedures.
- Report to manager on duty of any suspicious behaviors.
