Job Title: Solid Waste Driver

Department: Public Works

Division: Solid Waste

Reports To: Streets Maintenance/Solid Waste Superintendent

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Pay Grade: 06

SUMMARY: This position performs various manual and operational tasks in conjunction with the operation of the solid waste system. This position is appointed by the Streets/Solid Waste Superintendent and approved by the Director of Public Works. Requires valid Arkansas Commercial Driver’s License and clean driving record with proof of liability insurance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

  1. Operate the solid waste collection vehicle safely and efficiently.
  2. Operate independently and efficiently in order to complete daily solid waste route.
  3. Abide by and able to enforce, with the crew, Property Owners Association (POA) safety, personnel and Solid waste policies.
  4. Pick up litter and debris from roadways and common properties.
  5. Wash and clean vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  6. Keep all tools and material in a proper manner.
  7. Receive training in the operation in solid waste operations and procedures.
  8. Meet the public tactfully and courteously, directing complaints to supervisor.
  9. Required to drive POA vehicle.
  10. Regular attendance is required.
  11. Perform CDL pre and post trips on all assigned equipment and utilize the assigned logbook to document the inspection.
  12. Ability to complete assigned route utilizing route optimizing software and mapping program.
  13. Assist with yard waste and special pickups as assigned.
  14. Assist with the cleanup of illegal dumps as assigned.
  15. This position is subject to on duty lunch periods. An on-duty meal period is one in which the employee is not relieved of all duties.
  16. Ensure Solid Waste Workers are performing their job duties safely and efficiently.
  17. Employee at times is subject to being assigned other duties.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Must have skill in the use of standard equipment, tools, and vehicles used in the solid waste collection system.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Requires a valid Arkansas Commercial Driver’s License and clean driving record with proof of liability insurance.
