Job Summary:

The Accounting Manager is responsible for developing and monitoring budgets and for all financial reporting to the NorthStar Academies schools, Districts and Charter Board. The Accounting Manager works directly with the VP, Finance and Treasurer and will balance detailed financial and operational responsibilities, training and problem solving with the development of financial and operational strategies.

Essential Accounting Manager Responsibilities:

School Support and Financial Reporting
  • Prepare the annual budgets in collaboration with each school principal and appropriate EdisonLearning leadership team members to insure that each school is set up for student and staff success while staying within budgetary constraints to ensure the ongoing financial wellbeing of the organization;
  • Review and approve all purchases and employee hiring to ensure compliance with budgets;
  • Perform detailed monthly review of financial data to insure accurate and complete financial records;
  • Work with the Staff Accountant to ensure timely and accurate entry of all monthly journal entries including but not limited to: revenue accruals, payroll transactions, banking transactions, prepaid expenses. Depreciation and expense accruals;
  • Review monthly financial data against budgets with each school principal to ensure that financial targets are met and expenses are within budget;
  • Work with Staff Accountant on monthly financial reports for the charter board and Districts in accordance with EdisonLearning's contractual obligations;
  • Prepare all annual and other periodic finance related reports for the charter board and Districts in accordance with EdisonLearning's contractual obligations;
  • Establish and implement internal controls in accordance with Edison Learning's policies, statutory guidance and external auditor recommendations;
  • Work with team members to improve efficiencies and accuracies as needed;
  • Coordinate with the District to collect on amounts due to the School and to EdisonLearning and resolve disputes or discrepancies;
  • Take primary responsibility to ensure timely completion of the School's audit. Coordinate efforts of external auditors, internal team members and gather/prepare necessary documentation.
Key Relationships:

Internal: EdisonLearning, Inc. VP Finance and Treasurer. HR/Payroll and School Leadership & Support Services team members, School Principals.

External: District Finance Staff, Charter Board, Auditors and Vendors.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • CPA or MBA preferred;
  • Public or private accounting experience;
  • Experience managing financial processes in a multi-location environment;
  • Hands-on budget development and managing costs throughout the year to remain in budget;
  • Experience in developing strategies to take corrective budgetary actions when necessary;
  • Financial analysis experience, including budget to actual analysis and the ability to identify trends to reforecast;
  • Experience in establishing policies, procedures and controls;
  • Translating financial reports into multiple formats and presenting financial information to non-financial audiences or regulatory bodies;
  • Understanding of grants in order to budget grant revenues and manage eligible expenditures effectively;
  • Intermediate competency in Excel;
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks referred.
