Hours: 1st shift, 36 hours, days will vary | No Supervisory Responsibilities | No Travel | Pay commensurate with experience
Full-Time, day shift in Med/Surg. Eligible for a $3,000, 2 year commitment bonus.
JOB SUMMARY:
Our Nursing team members primary goal is to provide the most remarkable patient experience. The first shift Unit Secretary is to prepare and compile records in the Medical Surgical Nursing Department. Duties also include answering of telephone and intercom calls and provides information or relays messages to patients and the appropriate nursing staff. Performs all work with accordance to the mission, visions, and values of Ashe Memorial Hospital (AMH).
Minimum Job Qualifications:
Experience:
- One year of secretarial experience in the medical field preferred.
- Understanding of medical terminology.
License/Certifications:
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
- Current BLS Certification.
- Current Certified Nursing Assistant Certification in State of NC preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Unit Secretary: Prepares and maintains the complete medical record. In addition other duties include (but are not limited to):
- Prepares medical records for both new admissions and discharged patients.
- Processes physicians orders in the computer system accurately in a timely manner. Notifies nurse of any stat orders.
- Ability to be flexible organized and function under stressful and emergency situations.
- Assumes professional responsibility, functions effectively in a group to ensure completion of all patient care activities.
- Obtains appropriate nursing staff to assist patients/physicians in the care of the patient.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
- Adheres to safety policies.
- Interacts professionally with physicians, patient/family, and co-workers.
- Makes appointments for discharged patients with physicians office.
- Faxes lab and radiology requests to Outpatient Scheduling Department for patient follow-up after discharge.
- Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments, promoting teamwork.
- Documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Communicates appropriately and clear with Director of Inpatient Services, House Supervisor, co-workers, physicians, visitors, and family members.
- Answers telephone/intercom in a polite and professional manner, communicating information to the appropriate personnel.
- Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patients needs.
- Completes requisitions of secretarial supplies as designated by Clinical Leader.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
- Obtains licensed nurse when family requests communication regarding patients condition beyond the Unit Secretarys scope of practice.
- Checks charts daily, adds physician order forms and progress notes as needed.
- Notifies maintenance department and Clinical Leader of any equipment not in proper working order; completes work order as necessary.
- Utilizes initiative; strives to maintain steady level of productivity; self-motivated. Organization and management of secretarys activities reflect consideration for the needs of the department and staff.
- Assists in the coordination of patient transfers both in the facility and to other facilities.
- Keeps informed of patients condition and whereabouts when patient is out of room.
- Consistently completes and maintains assigned duties, completes other duties as assigned.
- Ensures confidentiality of patients records and information regarding patients hospitalization.
- Performs discharges, transfers, admitting or discharging of telemetry patients; changes in computer correctly in a timely manner. Also maintains telemetry log book.
- Uses time productively.
- Adheres to the Studer AIDET customer services principles:
- Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You.
- Attends staff meeting and in-services.
- Adheres to attendance policy.
- Uses computerized punch system correctly to accurately record working hours.
Must be willing to receive all required vaccinations (i.e., flu shot, etc.). All new employees working must be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment (unless the new hire has requested and received an exemption).
