SUMMARY:

Under the leadership of the Director of Interpreter Services, the ASL Staff Interpreter provides interpreting services

between hearing and Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and/or DeafBlind individuals. The ASL Staff Interpreter represents CHS

internally and to external stakeholders and the greater community. As such, this is a high-touch customer service role

that demands attention to detail, professionalism, quick problem-solving capabilities, excellent communication skills,

and flexibility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

*Provide confidential interpreting services between hearing and Deaf, DeafBlind, and/or Hard of Hearing individuals. Assignments take place in a variety of settings, including VRI.

*Adhere to the Illinois Interpreter for the Deaf Licensure Act and RID’s Code of Professional Conduct.

*Build/maintain strong relationships with customers, provide advocacy and education on interpreting policies and procedures, and the role and responsibilities of an interpreter where applicable.

*Attend workshops, conferences, webinars. Review literature and research to stay abreast on current trends and best practices in the field of interpreting.

*Continually maintain skills to ensure interpretation is clear and accurately conveys the meaning, spirit, and intent of the speaker.

*Manage schedule efficiently.

*Seek out feedback from Director on challenging situations.

*Maintain medical clearance without lapse in coverage.

*Comply with all CHS/Anixter policies and procedures.

*Mentor students and emerging interpreters.

*Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers and community partners; attract new business and interpreters to CHS by referral while in the community.

*Act as liaison to freelance interpreters; provide education on CHS’ policies and procedures, educational opportunities, and agency events; relay pertinent feedback to Director.

*Represent CHS’ values, policies, and procedures in all actions and communications.

*Develop and facilitate presentations/workshops.

*Collaborate with team on various projects.

*Manage and report monthly approved expenses to management on time.

*All other duties as assigned


REQUIREMENTS:

*Fluency in both American Sign Language and English with superior sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign language skills.

*Willingness to obtain medical clearance (Flu shot and TB test)

*Intermediate/Advanced/Master license by the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission.

*Strong problem-solving abilities with minimal oversight

*Adherence to strict confidentiality

*Ability to collaborate and contribute to a supportive team environment

*Strong organization and time management skills required.

*Curiosity, professional desire to grow, and great interpersonal skills are important to this role!

*Proficiency in computer and technology skills or ability to learn quickly.

*Ability to present professionally in-person and through written communication.

*Willingness to work a flexible schedule, but we will work with you on this!

*Be flexible; have a growth mindset in learning new skills or approaching challenges.

*Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to operational vehicle to travel independently in the Chicago metropolitan area and collar counties.

*Must have high speed internet with the ability to directly connect via an ethernet cable as well as a dedicated, private room with a door that fully closes for VRI work. Nonessential Skills and Experience:

*Illinois Advanced/Master license preferred

*Bachelor’s Degree preferred

*Fluency in Spanish and/or Tactile a plus

*High profile interpreting experience including televised and platform work a plus
