Established in 2008, the Dionne Mack-Harvin African American Heritage Center (AAHC) is a small space located in the Macon Library and contains material on African American history and culture as well as the "Taneya Gethers- Muhammad" children book collection. A landmark in the heart of a richly historic neighborhood Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY- Macon Library is primed to continue serving patrons for many years to come. Part of serving patrons, is to revitalize the AAHC by upgrading the materials collections as well as providing library patrons with programs and events that are culturally, academically and socially engaging.
The hours for this position is up to 19 hours a week and the hourly rate is $20 an hour.
Responsibilities:
The Junior Curator will work in collaboration with the Neighborhood Library Supervisor, the Friends of Macon Library and various community partners to plan, implement, and evaluate programs. Programs can include but are not limited to artist/author talks, genealogy, music performances, art exhibitions hosting tours and class visits. In addition to programming the curator will be responsible for maintaining the AAHC book collection by way of organizing and display new materials, assisting with the preservation of new collections.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors/ degree preferred in history, art and/or cultural studies
- Able to work 19 hours per week
- Willing to work evenings and/or weekends
- Experience with delivering public programming
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
