Description

The Additive Manufacturing Intern will support CCAM's research programs. Interns will help to ensure that projects are delivered on time, on budget, and with a high standard of quality.

IN THIS POSITION YOU WILL:

Improve understanding of basic additive manufacturing (AM) principles through:

  • Practical experience in operating and maintaining additive manufacturing equipment, including machine setup, troubleshooting, and operation.
  • CCAM's research on metal AM equipment covers Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), Directed Energy Deposition (DED and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM)
  • Polymer 3D printing (Fused Deposition Modeling, FDM) also employed for tooling and fixtures
  • Learning how to optimize designs for additive manufacturing to enhance efficiency and functionality.
  • Gaining an understanding of various AM materials and their applications.
  • Assisting in quality control processes, including in-situ sensing for process monitoring, inspection, testing, and documentation of AM parts to ensure they meet industry standards.
  • Learning and adhering to safety protocols and best practices in additive manufacturing to ensure a safe working environment.
Improve engineering problem solving skillset through:
  • Setup and operation of data acquisition platforms for in-situ data collection during the AM process
  • Application of simple data analysis using Excel and other native data processing applications
Improve technical communication skills through:
  • Data formatting, formal reporting and presentation of results
  • Learning the importance of maintaining accurate records in a manufacturing environment.
Work collaboratively with our researchers to:
  • Stay up to date with the latest developments in additive manufacturing technology and provide research support to the team.
  • Conduct and assist in data analysis.
  • Interface with our industry & government partners for technical collaboration and project status communications.
  • Develop concept and final design work, programming and program verification, interface with suppliers, and proposal / report writing.
Requirements

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS: The lists below are exhaustive, and we are only expecting the ideal candidate to have experience with at least two of the technical skills. The completed coursework section gives an overview of courses across the majors of Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, and Industrial Engineering that give conceptual foundation for the internship project work. It is not expected for candidates to have taken all these courses.

* This position requires access to technology or intellectual property that is subject to export control requirements. Candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license. *

*At a minimum, candidates must have partially (at least two years of academic credit) completed a scientific or engineering degree at an accredited university- rising Junior, Senior, or Graduate student. *

Academic Major OR Area of Focus: Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering or related Degree

Completed Coursework: Physics 1 with Laboratory, Physics II with Lab or Engineering II with Lab; Machines Laboratory, Engineering Problem Solving, Technical Writing/Public Speaking, Intro to Electronics/Circuit Analysis, Engineering Graphics 1 and 2

Technical Skills: Mechanical and electrical aptitude, fabrication experience\manual tool experience, CAD (NX preferred), data analysis/manipulation in Excel, technical writing/public speaking. Familiarity with additive manufacturing or 3D printing is preferred.
