ROLE TYPE: Full-Time Contract

8 hour Shift Monday- Friday 11:00AM-8:00PM

September 2023-May 2024

HOURLY RATE: $17.25

Position Overview:

ZEST Prep is seeking a school custodian to join its school operations support team. In this role, the custodian is responsible for Level I Maintenance (general/preventative maintenance) and cleanliness within ZEST Preparatory Academy and other facilities. Custodian, building and grounds maintenance worker collaborates with Custodian Foreman. Responsible for opening and closing facilities, which requires unlocking and locking all designated entrances. Ensuring that there are no personnel or students in the building prior to turning off all lights and ensuring that the entrance is properly secured. This position is safety sensitive.

This role will work on the Supervisor, Custodial Foreman and will report to the Senior Director of Operations.

The following statements describe the general nature and scope of work performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.

School custodians perform daily checks and ensure that all tools and equipment work properly and supplies are available for operations. Submit supply requisitions for tools, equipment, supplies, and other materials to maintain the building and grounds. Receives, stores, and issues all supplies delivered to the school or facility.

School custodian independently plans work methods to use, assigns designated work locations, develops shift schedules, and makes assignments in accordance with the employee's personal skills and abilities. Custodian performs other supervisory responsibilities as follows:

  • Consults with immediate supervisor, when necessary, on complex issues or problems requiring higher authority.
  • Determine the time it takes to complete a job and ensure its completion.
  • Establishes and ensures that deadlines are met in a timely manner or prior to the estimated time frame or determine if alternative or contracted work methods or an extension is needed.
  • Inspects employees' work as it progresses or after it has been completed.
  • Coordinates work methods with supervisor; and reschedules or redirects work efforts or resources resulting from emergency situations.

In collaboration with the supervisor, provides on-the-job training and/or demonstrates work methods.

General maintenance:
General cleaning (daily)

  • Keeps the school community clean.
  • Collects and disposes of all accumulated trash (picks up trash and empties trash cans and other trash receptacles)and bags trash for pick-up.
  • Sweeps (hallways, stairwells, multi-purpose rooms, bathrooms, etc.) mop, buffs, burnishes, strips, and wax floors.
  • Scrub the walls.
  • Maintains restroom cleanliness at all times; and reports leaks and non-working sinks, commodes, and urinals.
  • Perform routine classroom and office cleaning.
  • Removes indelible ink and stains by using cleaning solutions or spot painting where necessary.
  • Shampoos and spot cleans carpets.
  • Cleaning inside/outside windows (6ft and under)
  • Damp dust and wipe dry, all furniture, chairs, desks, tables, filing cabinets, lamps and telephones, (cleared areas of desks only).
  • Performs daily checks on vents and thermostats.
  • Works with teachers and other faculty members in arranging furniture in offices and classrooms, etc.; and informs supervisors if there are requests for arrangements to move large, heavy equipment from one location to another (may include desks, tables, chairs, files, audiovisual materials, projectors, screens, and removal of milk containers).
  • Performs or assists with converting all-purpose rooms when used- folds and stores tables.
  • Unboxing and moving deliveries.
  • Vacuum classrooms and all carpeted areas.
  • Provide deep cleaning on all scheduled breaks.

Plumbing

  • Makes repairs to the portable water and sanitary systems and pipes and plumbing fixtures.

Electrical

  • Make minor repairs to the low voltage electrical systems, machinery, and equipment.
  • Repairs and replaces electrical switches, receptacles, lamps, ballasts, bulbs, breakers, motors, pumps, starters, contractors, and other electrical equipment.
  • Changing damaged and missing ceiling tile.

Painting

  • Provide touch-up paint throughout the building to main the school's aesthetic.
  • Preps surfaces for painting by ensuring smooth surfaces, utilizing primer when needed.
  • Paints all types of interior and exterior surfaces with brushes, rollers, sprayers, etc.

Carpentry

  • Assists or makes minor repairs to counters, floor tiles, stairs, castings, window frames, cabinet doors, shelves, and various other minimal carpentry repairs.

Ground maintenance

  • Removes all debris from the school and outside facilities including hedges and shrubbery, rakes and removes leaves, and trims hedges and shrubbery.

Additional Requirements

  • Computer literate preferred.
  • Ability to follow written instructions.
  • Ability to follow oral instructions.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

[Experience]

  • Proven 2+ years of relevant experience.

[Physical functions]

The work involves a wide range of grounds and housekeeping and general maintenance functions for a school and facility, which involves moving heavy furniture/equipment, climbing ladders, bending, stopping, and standing for long periods. Good hand and eye coordination is required and the incumbent must be physically fit to carry out assignments.

Frequently, the incumbent will be required to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally, with assistance of special equipment and/or other workers, up to 90 pounds.

[Working Conditions]

Building and general maintenance work normally is performed indoors and grounds maintenance is performed outside during all four seasons in all types of weather. Based on the assignment, the Incumbent is confronted with a variety of conditions such as extreme heat and cold. Also, the Incumbent is subject to receive abrasions, cuts, splinters, bruises, strains, and burns, to fall off ladders, and/or to inhale fumes when exposed to strong cleaning chemicals.
