POSITION: CUSTODIAN - Substitute

EFFECTIVE DATE: ASAP

POSITION SUMMARY:

The school custodian plays an essential role in maintaining the building and physical plant, and

supporting a learning environment that promotes health, attitude and pride of students. In addition

to regular building cleaning functions, the school custodian provides direct support to principal

and classroom teachers in set up and maintenance of furniture and equipment. The school

custodian also serves as a role model for students by displaying a professional, courteous, and

helpful nature. Assists in campus security as necessary.

  1. Cleaning Functions
Depending upon the assignment may:

Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and refinish floors; clean, dust and polish furniture; wash

windows and walls; clean restrooms; dispose of rubbish, change lights, etc.; make certain all areas

of the building are kept in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition according to industry and/or

district standards.

Pick up litter within the schools and on school grounds.

Assure safety during inclement weather to include shovelling, snowblowing, sanding, de-icing,

snow removal from roofs and removing debris from down spouts, rain gutters and roof drains as needed.

Applies cleaning chemicals according to established safety procedures and product manufacturer instructions.

Adheres to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and when operating equipment and using tools.

Performs minor repair and maintenance as authorized by district maintenance staff.

Removes extraneous dirt/markings from interior and exterior vertical/horizontal surfaces (walls, doors, etc.).

Advise building principal/Maintenance Department on matters relating to mechanical equipment and/or building maintenance

Performs minor painting and repairs on walls, handrails, door and window frames, and other areas of the school.

Keeps all equipment in a good state of repair and cleanliness
  1. Safety and Security

Periodically inspects, or otherwise maintains awareness of, facility and equipment to

detect and prevent injuries or damage.

Secures school building to maintain proper building security at all times. Lock, secure and

Arm (security system) the building at end of shift.

Verifies that emergency equipment is maintained and repaired as needed.

Assists in implementing emergency planning and response.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and accomplish work on schedule and at a consistently high level of quality.
  • Current First Aid and CPR cards (may be obtained after employment).
  • Ability to safely and effectively use all materials, tools and equipment commonly used in the care of school buildings, grounds and systems.
  • Ability to maintain positive and productive working relationships with school staff, administrators, students and the public.
  • Demonstrated initiative, flexibility and dependability in discharging custodial duties.
  • Good communication skills Must have a valid Washington State Driver's License, as job does require operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Education - High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year custodial experience in a commercial or educational setting or equivalent preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS - With or Without Reasonable Accommodation:
  • Custodian must be capable of standing/walking without restriction.
  • Must have ability to reach, grasp, handle and grip without difficulty on a continuous basis.
  • Stooping/bending or squatting is required on a frequent basis, ranging from a slight forward bend to a floor level reach.
  • Must be able to lift and carry objects on a constant to frequent basis weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and carry objects weighing more than 50 pounds (workers may request assistance when asked to lift or carry objects weighing over 50 pounds).
  • Frequent pushing or pulling depending on assignment.
  • Must be able to work effectively at heights (ladders, lifts, roofs, etc.)
  • Must be able to work under extreme hot and cold temperatures both indoors and out-of-doors.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment due to potential exposure to chemicals, solvents, dust, allergens, high noise levels, and spilled bodily fluids.


WAGE: $20.12/hour as a substitute
