South Newton School Corporation Position Description

Position Title: Custodian

Department: South Newton Elementary, Middle or High School

Reports To: Principal or Head Custodian

Summary: To keep the schools clean and safe for students and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Empty trash cans and take trash to dumpster.
  • Wash marker boards.
  • Clean sink in classrooms.
  • Check paper towel and soap dispensers.
  • Wash windows in hallway, if needed.
  • Once a week, dust computers and TV's.
  • Vacuum classroom floors.
  • Check room for needed repairs and report to head custodian.
  • During Flu season, wash all desk tops on Mondays and Thursdays.
  • Vacuum hallways.
  • Clean Restrooms: Wash stools and urinals with disinfectant. Wash sinks and mirrors, check soap dispensers, check paper towel and toilet paper. Check stall walls for soils and graffiti. Clean stainless. Mop floors with disinfectant cleaner.
  • Empty pencil sharpeners.
  • Wash blankets for the Health Suite.
  • Keep marks washed off of hallway walls and pillars.
  • Make sure building is secure upon departure.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned which are necessary for the daily operation of the school program.


Qualifications Requirements: Ability to develop effective working relations with students, staff, and the school community.

Education and/or Experience:High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general information.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to do basic math and record data.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems in the custodial area.

Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, crawl, kneel, and stoop. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must regularly lift 60 pounds and or pull/push several hundred pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision sufficient to read typed or written material.
