Summary

Under general supervision, performs custodian duties and assists supervisor with coordination of all building custodial functions while maintaining the established quality standards, safe operations, and complete regulatory compliance by training, evaluating, and motivating assigned personnel in their work.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads other employees in providing custodial services to include all cleaning activities, scheduling, assignment of staff, and training activities
  • Provides motivations and direction to custodial team members on a routine basis
  • Takes initiative and acts independently to insure needs of building occupants are met while working within the guidelines established by their supervisor
  • Plans, assigns, monitors and inspects the work of custodians
  • Enforces the use of Personal Protective Equipment by custodial staff at all times
  • Assist Custodial Supervisor in inspecting areas on a regular basis
  • Work with Custodial Supervisor in maintaining good rapport between the custodial staff and building staff
  • Lead the custodial operation in the absence of the Custodial Supervisor
  • Performs general, routine custodial duties, to include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, sanitizing, cleaning restrooms/kitchens, and restocking of supplies as needed
  • Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies
  • Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal
  • Unlocks doors, ensuring doors are locked after cleaning areas
  • Reports needs and concerns to Custodial Supervisor, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels; responsible for reporting concerns related to Bexar County buildings and facilities
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices
  • Demonstrates safe and proper use of chemical/cleaning solutions and replenishing of housekeeping carts
  • Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements
  • All staff members share responsibility for delivering exceptional services and ensuring custodial guidelines are met
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, 2 years of custodial commercial experience, to include one (1) year of lead custodian experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Good knowledge of proper chemical storage, use and inventory
  • Effective organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and strong follow-through on delegated tasks and assignments
  • Ability to make the most efficient use of personnel as instructed
  • Ability to work effectively independently or with a team
  • Good knowledge of policies, practices, procedures and methods of custodial and sanitation functions; good knowledge of safety standards and practices
  • Skill in operating cleaning equipment, such as buffers, strippers, waxers, vacuums, carpet cleaning machines; cleaning windows, dusting furniture, and unstopping toilets
  • Ability to perform a variety of maintenance functions; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, department heads, County employees, outside agencies/vendors and the public
  • Must maintain appropriate level of confidentiality in all business and facility interactions
  • May be assigned to any or various Bexar County facilities, including Detention facilities
  • Must be able to work non-traditional hours to include evenings and weekends
  • May be required to be on-call and respond to call outs and emergency situations.
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office
  • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
  • May require a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the department.
  • May work late nights
  • Must have and maintain a valid Texas driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance
  • Must be bilingual in Spanish
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
  • Working conditions are primarily indoors with exposure to temperature variations May require working in jail environment
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions
  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as damp/wet surfaces, extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises
  • Frequently moves equipment weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Occasionally moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Will frequently communicate with co-workers; must be able to exchange accurate information
  • Frequently moves about buildings
  • Constantly positions self to perform essential functions
  • Constantly operates tools and equipment
