Job Description
YMCA Sports Staff will officiate games, assist with practices, and mentor young athletes through clinics and sports seasons. Staff will undergo training for the sport they are working with and have support from department leadership throughout. Sports staff must embody the core values of the YMCA as role models to young athletes, setting the standard for cooperation, integrity, and sportsmanship.
Requirements:EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
This individual needs to be at least 16 years old. Applicants should have enthusiasm and willingness to learn the skills needed to support and officiate soccer, t-ball, and basketball. Prior experience playing or officiating sports is beneficial, but not required. Training will be offered to all staff to develop the skills they need to succeed in this role. Certification with the state association or 2 years experience in specific sport is preferred. Upon hire, staff will complete training including CPR, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention, Principles of Youth Development, Orientation to YMCA Youth Sports, and more. All staff must adhere to our employee handbook and model the YMCA 5 Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Inclusion, Respect, and Responsibility.
SPECIAL SKILLS OR EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
Must be of sound mind, good character, possess good communication skills and be safety minded at all times. Staff should be willing to handle challenging situations and develop skills to navigate those with support from department leadership.
PHYSICAL AND/OR MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
This individual needs to be able to remain on their feet for extended periods of time demonstrating physical stamina and agility, indoors and outdoors. They need to be self-starters, take initiative, and be strong multi-taskers. Staff must be able to keep practices, games, and clinics on schedule and direct player traffic accordingly. This individual needs to be able to lift and carry at least 30 pounds, helping to manage equipment and spaces where activities are being held. If an individual must lift and carry more than 30 pounds, they must ask for assistance from another staff member.
JOB DUTIES:
1. Assess the playing conditions to ensure safety for players
2. Meet with coaches and players prior to the start of games to ensure understanding of any rules variations that might be in effect
3. Arrive before the start of games for set up and remain after game for clean up of all equipment and playing areas.
4. Ensure that games begin and end at scheduled times
5. Serve as a positive role model to players, parents, coaches, and fellow officials by enforcing all rules, demonstrating good sportsmanship, and officiating consistently with the YMCA Youth Sports philosophy
6. Report any injuries to supervisor
7. Before each game and practice, bring teams to the center and teach Character Development, leading the Character Creed at practices and Sports Pledge at games ahead of play.
8. Understand and enforce all game rules and regulations, as well as enforcing them
9. Create a nurturing and safe environment by reporting suspicious activity that may lead to child abuse or may violate the code of conduct.
10. Keep supplies organized, maintain and clean facility and care for equipment.
11. Be responsible for all equipment and reporting any equipment damage or loss to supervisor.
12. Keep accurate time, score, penalty, fouls, and out count during all games.
13. Lead activities at clinics in alignment with program plans and schedules, as directed by supervisor.
