Under the direction of the Sports Program Director, The Associate Sports Director oversees the delivery of Sports classes and programs, provides leadership to the full instructional and competitive sports program and leads in the delivery of the Saturday or Sunday sports The Associate Sports Director assists the Director in program management and operations, providing instruction in all sports areas, which include parent-child, preschool, school age as well as competitive teams. Additionally, he/she shares responsibility for supervision of the instructional staff, and coaches assuring that all training and safety standards are maintained and strengthened on an ongoing basis. As a member of the Y management team, the incumbent actively participates as needed in a variety of cross-departmental projects and initiatives that advance the Y mission and strategic plan goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT

  • Has and maintains current knowledge and understanding of all programs offered.
  • Provides leadership and maintains active attendance at special events and related sports tournaments, ensuring seamless execution, effective coordination, and positive representation of the organization.
  • Remains knowledgeable of the current trends in sports and recreation.
  • Develops and maintains new and exciting programs in the Sports department.
  • Ensures that skills on daily lesson plans are presented to classes with proper instruction.
  • Provides an energizing safe and fun environment for participants.
  • Supervises open sports offerings, including but not limited to basketball, volleyball, and pickle ball.
  • Instructs assigned classes and coaches competitive practices.
STAFF SUPERVISION, LEADERSHIP & DEVELOPMENT
  • Supervises and supports all related staff in the Sports program.
  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with children and reinforces with all staff.
  • Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations and follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Assists in the creation of a comprehensive program outline for the student volunteers and organizes and guides the program to reach the objectives.
  • Observes staff performance and appraises its effectiveness, recommending appropriate salary recognition to Director.
  • Actively leads and participates in staff meetings and training, fostering collaboration, professional development, and effective communication, while assuming responsibility for operations in the Director's absence
  • Provides for the training and development of program staff and volunteers.
  • Supports coordination of substitute staff schedules.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONISBILITIES
  • Assists in the development of the annual budgets and prepares variance and other reports.
  • Oversees enrollment processes, coordinates athlete league registrations, player carding, game scheduling, ordering team apparel and organizes referee assignments for travel teams.
  • Responsible for managing, scheduling, and booking private sports lessons, ensuring a seamless and efficient process for clients and instructors.
  • Reviews and update lesson plans to be implemented at all levels of instruction.
  • Assists in the creation of and updates program schedules for each session. Evaluates program enrollment and accommodates waiting lists. Maintains and updates class rosters as needed.
  • Assists staff with evaluating participants and provides evaluation forms and tracking sheets to recommend appropriate class level for future registration in the program.
  • Maintains list of program participants' in order to provide outreach for continued future registrations.
  • Assists in the creation of and updates program schedules for each session. Evaluates program enrollment and accommodates waiting lists. Maintains and updates class rosters as needed.

ORGANIZATION-WIDE SUPPORT/COLABORATION
  • Interacts with a positive attitude with participants, members, parents and staff.
  • Performs as an integral member of the Family Center staff team, working toward an increase in member growth, satisfaction and retention and program expansion.
  • Participates in registrations, open houses, Healthy Kids Day, and other YMCA community events.
  • Handles unexpected situations/emergencies in an efficient, professional manner, completes incident reports following every qualifying incident.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe facility. Inspects equipment to ensure it is in proper working order and reports any areas that may require maintenance or repair.
  • Participates in staff meetings and training.
  • Assists with other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience in related field.
  • Attend required abuse risk management trainings.
  • The incumbent must bring to this position an appropriate background and 2-3 years of relevant experience to carry out the goals and objectives of the Y's sports programs, including adult and youth sports, teams, and leagues.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Must be able to manage the facilities, equipment, and resources of the department for delivery of high quality recreational Sports instruction.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and use of computers.
  • Must be a team player and have excellent member engagement skills.
  • Current CPR/AED and First-Aid Certifications or will train
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Enjoy, be skilled at and understand the importance of building relationships with people: members, staff, volunteers, donors, and community leaders.
  • Maintain professional, pleasant, and positive demeanor at all times.
  • YMCA Team Leader Certification preferred
  • Must have excellent communication skills and supervisory experience.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Ability to work in excess of a 40-hour week with irregular work hours, including early mornings, nights, and weekends.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time. May also require bending, kneeling, and leaning.
  • Potential exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids is possible. Ability to administer first aid.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 30 pounds in weight.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to speak and write concisely and demonstrate effective communication.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
  • Ability to be flexible and to work in a variety of settings and environments.

  • Work with the Development Team, HR, and key philanthropy volunteers to increase your understanding and skill set.
  • Train, mentor, equip and hold your staff accountable for participating in the annual campaign by identifying and recruiting member volunteers and soliciting donations.
  • Build strategic relationships with members for year-round member cultivation to increase the number of member campaign volunteers and donors.
  • Assist in achieving department annual support campaign goals by directly and personally participating in campaign efforts and ongoing fundraising by identifying and recruiting new volunteers and potential new donors.
