Description:
Officiate recreational and competitive athletic or sporting events. Detect infractions of rules and decide penalties according to established regulations. Includes all sporting officials and referees.
Qualifications:
Officials must have a thorough knowledge of the rules of the sport and be able to enforce them during play. This can involve studying the sports' rule book, as well as attending classes or seminars. Some sports organizations review and update their rules annually, so continuous study is often necessary.

Responsibilities:
Signal participants or other officials to make them aware of infractions or to otherwise regulate play or competition. Inspect sporting equipment and/or examine participants in order to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations. Keep track of event times, elapsed time during game segments, and starting or stopping play when necessary. Officials are responsible for ensuring that the sport is played safely. This may involve intervening in altercations between opposing players and administering penalties or ejections if warranted, and possibly reporting flagrant behavior to league officials. They also check player's uniforms and equipment to verify compliance with safety rules. Resolve claims of rule infractions or complaints by participants and assess any necessary penalties, according to regulations. Report to regulating organizations regarding sporting activities, complaints made, and actions taken or needed such as fines or other disciplinary actions. Research and study players and teams in order to anticipate issues that might arise in future engagements. Report directly to Recreation Program Coordinator.
