Powered by AmeriCorps, Up2Us Sports Coaches harness the power of sports to transform the lives of youth and local schools and organizations within their communities. Throughout their service term, Up2Us Sports Coaches are trained on how to use sports to inspire youth to achieve their potential and develop life skills that lead to success on and off the playing field. Up2Us Sports Coaches participate in service projects throughout their communities and join a network of over 3,000 Up2Us Sports Coaches and alumni.

What you'll do

As an Up2Us Sports AmeriCorps member, you will coach teams and/or P.E. classes for elementary to high school aged youth across South Florida. You will be trained on how to become a Sports Based Youth Development coach to positively impact youth mental and physical well-being. You will monitor youth progress and work with program and/or school staff on sports practice planning, recess facilitation, PE class instruction, and small group spaces.

You will be selected to serve in one of many schools and community based organizations including:
  • Miami-Dade County Public Schools
  • Miami Marlins Foundation
  • Overtown Youth Center

Role and Responsibilities

Experience working with youth, sports, or both is preferred. We provide on-going training opportunities to support you during your service. Also, program and school staff will guide you every step of the way. Below are some specific tasks you may be asked to do:

  • Assist P.E. teacher in class lessons
  • Facilitate a structured recess
  • Head coach or assistant coach a sports team
  • Work with identified students one-on-one and in small groups
  • Develop sport skills by student level, physically displaying and encouraging sport activity
  • Implement a behavior management system for students
  • Develop social-emotional skills throughout their day, using evidence-based strategies learned during Up2Us Training
  • Collaborate with program or school staff and team members to collect surveys and roster information
  • Create an engaging, safe and healthy play space for youth to thrive

Up2Us Sports Requirements and Benefits

Coaches are required to:
  • Attend and complete all Sports Based Youth Development (SBYD) Training provided
  • Collect surveys and rosters on youth groups
  • Complete bi-weekly timesheets

You will be eligible for:
  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award
  • Loan forbearance and interest accrual payments for qualified student loans
  • Time accrual toward the U.S. Department of Education's Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, (see Reduction of Education Costs)
  • Income-based Loan Repayment Plan (IBR)

Eligibility Requirements

Up2Us Sports AmeriCorps members are as diverse a group as the communities we serve. We're looking for you if you want to build yourself, give back to local communities, and are ready to change the world.

To apply you must:
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident (Authorization to work in the U.S. is not sufficient)
  • Must have, or be working towards, a GED, high school diploma or equivalent; some college experience preferred
  • Have served no more than three terms in an AmeriCorps state or national program
  • Have access to reliable transportation
  • Complete and pass a background check
