Position Summary: 
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. 

The Family and Sports Program Director at Parkway Community YMCA will lead, develop and launch activities that bring youth, caregivers and families closer together, encourage good health and foster connections through various activities and shared interest. Under the supervision of the Associate Branch Executive, the Youth and Family Director oversees the administration and operations of the following program areas; youth sports, adult sports, Child Watch, Parents Night Out, teen activities, annual campaign and special events all while ensuring a positive, safe, enriching environment, and others as developed based on the community needs in accordance to the YMCA core values and mission.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensures programs and services meet community needs to include supervising existing program activities, establishing new program activities, and expanding the program within the community as needed, in accordance with strategic and operating plans.  
  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information. 
  • Manage program rosters, enrollment and reporting. Evaluate program effectiveness.  
  • Recruits and hires diverse staff and volunteer teams across multiple dimensions of diversity. Trains and develops staff and volunteers to meet program goals and quality measures. Utilizes strategies to motive, empower staff and achieve key objectives. 
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships internally and externally to include community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility. 
  • Develops and monitors the program budgets to meet fiscal objectives. 
  • Securing and scheduling the needed facilities; and creating and scheduling the classes, activities or events. 
  • Provides direct service instruction/facilitation of 10-15 hours per week in programs. Secures appropriate staffing for programs and provides coverage when needed.  
  • Collaborates with other branch departments on programs and services as well as communication on upcoming activities.  
  • Develops new programs, events, or services that meet the needs of the community and that are aligned with strategic goals of fostering core relationships between participants; Staff to caregiver / child, child to child, caregiver to caregiver, caregiver to child.  
  • Ensures a variety of program offerings including but not limited to physical activity, arts, dance, sports and games, etc. for a wide range of age groups birth to 13 years old.  
  • Welcomes current and new family members and provides support in aligning their needs with programs and services.
  • Ensures programs and services meet community needs to include supervising existing program activities, establishing new program activities, and expanding the program within the community as needed, in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Leadership of leagues, serving up to 600 participants.
  • Marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Participate in the Annual Campaign as a staff worker and sustaining member.
  • Provides direct service instruction/facilitation of 20 hours per week in programs with an emphasis on skill development and character.
  • Develops new programs, leagues, or services that meet the needs of the community and that are aligned with strategic goals.
  • Oversee the administration and operation of programs serving children of all ages, youth, teens, and families at branch and off-site, to include developing and implementing policy and procedures, planning, promoting, implementing, hiring and training staff, risk management, evaluation, and budgeting.
  • Oversee the administration and operations of YMCA youth sports programming, to include planning, promoting, hiring and training staff, risk management, and budgeting.
  • Participate in community field and gymnasium summits.
  • Oversees administration and operations of Stay & Play program serving members 6 weeks to 12 years, to ensure a nurturing, safe, fun, interactive environment for children.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and maintenance of the all Youth/Teen facilities to safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Develop and execute meaningful and impactful teen programming in and outside of the YMCA.
  • Develop and manage the Youth and Family Department budget ensuring that the department operates in a fiscally sound manner and achieves financial goals.
  • Teach/Coach youth and family programs as needed or directed.
  • Support branch/department initiatives to membership retention and Annual Giving goals.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with members, staff, and community.
  • Interpret, communicate, and promote Y mission, goals, and objectives to employees, volunteer’s leaders, members, and community.
  • Partner/collaborate with organizations whose mission is aligned with the Y to meet the needs of community children, youth, and families.
  • Develop and enhance off-site Y youth programming to improve access to Y programs and reach underserved populations.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Evening, holidays and Weekend shifts are an expectation.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Education/Experience: 
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Services / Health Sciences or related field. 
  • YMCA Team Leader certification preferred. 
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working with youth and families
  • Two years of experience supervising and developing staff and volunteer teams. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of the developmental progression of skills of children and program development.
  • Four years of sports coaching experience. 
  • Previous experience operating sports leagues in a leadership role preferred. 
  • Experienced in and passionate about creating and fostering communities and relationship building through programs.
  • Experience with creating, implementing, and evaluating Youth and Family Programming and events.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Demonstrate initiative, effectively prioritize, and possess strong organizational skills.
  • Within 30 days of hire, completion of Child Abuse Prevention, Working with Program Volunteers, CPR, First Aid, AED, and Blood borne Pathogens training. 
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

  • Ability to physically and verbally interact with members and staff. 
  • At times, be able to lift amounts up to 50 lbs. 
 
 
Required Training/Certifications: 
  • Child Abuse Prevention 
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certifications 
  
Work Environment: 
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 
  • This position requires a flexible schedule including  daytime, evening, and weekend availability depending on the needs of the position
