Position Overview

Marquette University School of Dentistry (MUSoD) seeks qualified candidates for a full-time faculty position in dental anesthesiology at the school’s main campus in Milwaukee. The Dental Anesthetist/Anesthesiologist plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and comfort of adult, pediatric, and special needs patients undergoing various dental procedures requiring anesthesia. Working within the dental school’s clinical setting, the Dental Anesthetist/Anesthesiologist collaborates closely with dental faculty, residents, and other healthcare professionals to provide optimal patient care. The Dental Anesthetist/Anesthesiologist plays a vital role in supporting the MUSoD goals to provide exceptional dental education, patient care, and community service.

As Wisconsin’s only dental school, MUSoD is answering the call to meet workforce needs, increase access to oral health care for underserved patients, and advance dental education in Wisconsin. MUSoD serves the community on its main campus in Milwaukee and in outreach clinics across the State of Wisconsin.

Duties and Responsibilities

Anesthesia Administration: Administer various types of anesthesia, including local anesthesia, conscious sedation, and general anesthesia, according to patient needs and procedure requirements. Ensure the safe and effective delivery of anesthesia while monitoring patient vital signs and adjusting anesthesia levels as necessary.

Patient Assessment and Consultation: Conduct pre-anesthetic evaluations to assess patients’ medical histories, current health status, and suitability for anesthesia. Provide consultations to patients and their families regarding anesthesia options, risks, and benefits, ensuring informed consent.

Anesthesia Planning and Management: Develop individualized anesthesia plans based on patients’ medical conditions, procedural requirements, and preferences. Coordinate anesthesia services with dental faculty and other healthcare providers to optimize patient outcomes.

Patient Monitoring and Support: Monitor patients throughout anesthesia administration and dental procedures, maintaining vigilance for any signs of complications or adverse reactions. Provide immediate intervention and support in the event of emergencies, including airway management and resuscitation.

Quality Assurance and Compliance: Adhere to established protocols, guidelines, and regulatory standards governing anesthesia administration and patient care. Participate in quality improvement initiatives, peer review processes, and continuing education to enhance anesthesia practices and ensure compliance with best practices.

Education and Training: Provide didactic and hands-on clinical instruction and training to dental students, residents, nurse anesthetist students, and other healthcare professionals on the safe and proper administration of anesthesia, and other topics related to anesthesia pharmacology, techniques, and patient management. Serve as a resource for dental faculty and staff regarding anesthesia-related issues and advancements. Collaborate with other faculty members to enhance the overall dental curriculum.

Research and Scholarship: Engage in scholarly activities, including research projects, clinical studies, and publications, to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in dental anesthesia and related fields. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to pursue innovative approaches to anesthesia practice and patient care.

Service: Serve on the Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) for MUSoD.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Required KSAs for Nurse Anesthetist:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Completion of an accredited master’s or doctoral program in nurse anesthesia.
  • Licensed in the state of WI as a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist)
  • Advanced training in anesthesia pharmacology, airway management, and emergency protocols.
  • 1-3 years of full-time work experience as a CRNA
  • Strong clinical skills, including proficiency in administering various types of anesthesia and managing anesthesia-related complications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and communicate complex medical information to patients and colleagues.
  • Strong commitment to patient safety, quality care, education, and professional development.
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from a US or Canadian accredited medical school or dental school, or a comparable international degree.
  • Completion of an accredited residency program in anesthesiology or dental anesthesiology.
  • Board certification or eligibility for board certification in anesthesiology or dental anesthesiology.
  • Current, unrestricted state of Wisconsin license to practice medicine or dentistry.
  • Current, unrestricted special permit issued by the state of Wisconsin to administer anesthesia.
  • 1-3 years of full-time experience as a dental anesthesiologist.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Clinical experience in dental anesthesiology.
  • Previous dental teaching experience in a clinical setting.
