Summary:

The Clinical Consulting Specialist is a nurse with expertise within a specialized area of nursing practice responsible for working with challenging circumstances stemming from complex illness and diverse individual, cultural, and family needs. The role provides care or supports staff in care delivery for populations requiring uniquely skilled interventions that are consistent with best practices, policies, strategic goals, and RUSHICARE values. The Clinical Consulting Specialist role is a member of the nursing leadership team and demonstrates advanced knowledge and skills in education, organizational management, and forging partnerships. Gaining cooperative efforts to promote a safe work environment through problem-solving and making recommendations to remove barriers to appropriate caregiving are also key performance areas. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Required Job Qualifications:

  1. Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure.
  2. Master’s degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing preferred. This job may also include advanced practice nurses certified as clinical nurse specialists or nurse practitioners (NPs) who DO NOT hold core privileges.
  3. Progressive experience and advanced knowledge in a specialized area of clinical nursing.
  4. Critical thinking and high-level analytical ability.
  5. Ability to interpret complex organizational systems.
  6. Demonstrate high-level skills in leadership, communication, collaboration, mentoring, and change as evidenced by portfolio, recommendation letters, references, interview, and demonstration.
  7. Computer skills using various applications: Internet, e-mail, word programs, and databases.
  8. Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and contact with potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents.
  9. The ability to check documents for errors, use a keyboard to enter or retrieve data, and closely examine specimens, images, or reports.

Physical Demands:

  1. Work requires the ability to walk throughout the Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the designated shift.
  2. Work requires lifting or carrying objects 35-40lbs. and lifting and positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs.

Responsibilities:

  1. Plans the delivery of nursing care for patients and families in coordination with the healthcare team.
  2. Provides expert consultation in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care plans for patients with complex health needs.
  3. Develops plans for safety needs throughout the organization.
  4. Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team using the nursing process to integrate the nursing perspective into a comprehensive plan of care for the patient/family.
  5. Partners with others to identify and remove barriers that affect patient outcomes and facilitate solutions at a patient, unit, or system level.
  6. Promotes continuity of care by working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team utilizing knowledge of the range of treatments available.
  7. Selects and evaluates educational resources for patients, families, or groups appropriate to developmental level, health literacy level, learning needs, personal preferences, and readiness to learn.
  8. Selects and promotes optimal, cost-effective resource utilization and interventions.

Nursing Practice:

  1. Provides formal and informal education for nurses, students, and other professionals.
  2. Provides consultation on the latest evidence supporting cost-effective, safe nursing and clinical practices.
  3. Collaborates to create a Standard of Practice using evidence-based information to achieve outcomes for indicators that are nurse-sensitive.
  4. Mentors nurse colleagues in using evidence-based practice principles and to develop critical thinking and clinical judgment.
  5. Creates an environment that stimulates continuous self-learning, reflective practice, and sense of ownership.
  6. Provides education on complex clinical issues to clients.
  7. Participates in committees to promote professional nursing practice or improve outcomes.
  8. Collaborates with other departments to develop and/or review orientation, clinical competency, and additional clinical education programs.
  9. Participates, as appropriate, in research and/or studies and quality projects conducted by nurses and multidisciplinary teams.
  10. Partners with hospital departments and individuals to design, implement, and evaluate programs and initiatives aligned with the organization’s strategic plans, regulatory agency requirements, guidelines, and standards of care.
  11. Uses effective strategies for changing clinician behavior to encourage adoption of evidence-based practices and innovations in care delivery.
  12. Contributes to the development of policies, procedures, and protocols in the area of expertise.
