Overview
The RN Labor Delivery position plays a critical role within our healthcare team, primarily responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to expectant mothers during the labor and delivery process. This unique and rewarding role involves working with obstetricians, neonatologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the health and safety of both mother and newborn. Labor and delivery nurses are essential in guiding families through one of the most significant experiences of their lives, offering not only expert clinical care but also emotional and educational support throughout the birthing experience. The RN in this role must possess a strong foundation in maternal-newborn nursing, be adept at assessing and managing high-risk situations, and demonstrate exceptional communication skills to convey concerns and educate families about their options. Ultimately, the RN Labor Delivery serves as a vital advocate for patients, ensuring a safe and positive childbirth experience for all involved.
Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough assessments of the patient’s physical and emotional well-being.
  • Monitor fetal heart rates and note any abnormalities or concerns.
  • Administer medications and interventions as per physician orders.
  • Assist in developing individualized care plans for each patient.
  • Communicate effectively with the healthcare team regarding patient progress and concerns.
  • Provide emotional support and education to patients and their families.
  • Assist with the delivery process and manage complications as they arise.
  • Document all assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately and timely.
  • Provide neonatal care immediately following delivery.
  • Educate patients on postpartum care and breastfeeding techniques.
  • Participate in continuous education and maintaining certifications relevant to labor and delivery.
  • Guide and support nursing students and new staff as needed.
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary environment for patients and staff.
  • Adhere to hospital policies, protocols, and quality standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the labor and delivery unit.
Required Qualifications
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Minimum of two years nursing experience, with at least one year in Labor Delivery.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required.
  • Strong knowledge of maternal-newborn nursing practices and protocols.
  • Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and high-stress environment.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to educate patients and families effectively.
  • Knowledge of current healthcare regulations and standards.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and education.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks.
