POSITION DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT: Converting
POSITION TITLE: Slitter Assistant
DIRECT REPORT: Production Supervisor

Job Summary:
The Slitter Assistant performs a variety of manual and mechanical tasks to support the setup and operation of converting machinery. Responsibilities include machine setup, loading product, operating machinery, performing quality checks, conducting routine machine maintenance, and other related duties. This role requires strong verbal communication skills, visual acuity for machine operation and product details, manual coordination, dexterity with hand tools, and the physical ability to lift weights, climb, and work around machinery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Production Support: Assist the operator(s) in maintaining ongoing production.
  • Roll Handling: Manage the rewind rolls coming on and off slitting/rewinding machinery. Unload rewind rolls, take samples, and label products as needed.
  • Core and Supply Management: Cut cores to job specifications and maintain an adequate supply of cores and packing materials for all slitting/rewinding machines.
  • Rework and Labeling: Rewind and fix non-conforming finished product rolls on the sidewinder. Create and print labels for reworked products.
  • Roll Organization: Unload finished rolls and organize them into cartons or on pallets for shipping, or stage them for material handling pick-up.
  • Sampling and Verification: Take product samples from each finished roll and apply the appropriate sample label for operator verification.
  • Routine Maintenance: Perform regular cleaning and maintenance of the work area to ensure a safe and clean environment.
  • Work Area Organization: Sweep debris and empty waste containers to maintain a tidy workspace.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow all safety rules and regulations and use the required safety equipment. Report any mechanical or electrical concerns related to machine maintenance. Address unsafe conditions and report them to the appropriate personnel.
  • Team Collaboration: Work with the leadership team to achieve performance goals, and participate in special projects and assignments as directed by the business.
  • Operator Lunch Coverage: Provide coverage for the operator's lunch break as needed.

Skills & Knowledge Requirements:

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Machine operators experience preferred, with the ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Capability to follow detailed instructions and communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers.
  • Ability to read a tape measure to 1/16" and understand basic math, including decimals.
  • Manual dexterity and coordination in using hand tools and cleaning equipment.
  • Careful handling of equipment to ensure safety and prevent damage.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and contribute to a collaborative environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Typical manufacturing environment with exposure to continuous noise, material scents, bright workstations, and machinery with moving parts.
  • Stand for approximately 8-12 hours daily on concrete floors.
  • Repetitive lifting of rolls, airshafts, or metal pipes weighing up to approximately 50 lbs., with varying heights up to 5 feet.
  • Physical tasks include squatting, crouching, turning, twisting, stretching, climbing steps, grabbing, pulling, pushing, and bending.
  • Vision acuity (Ishihara machine eye exam) for color perception.
  • Ability to collaborate and uphold Garlock's commitment to a Food Safe environment.

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to typical manufacturing and production facilities, including continuous noise, material scents, bright workstations, and moving machinery.
