Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator Supervisor/ Mechanic

Department: Forestry

Reports To: Project Leader

Position Summary:

Protects the assets of Santa Clara Pueblo by supervising, operating, maintaining, repairing, and servicing all heavy machinery, vehicles, equipment, and small motors, both gasoline and diesel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administers and executes assigned projects and/or activities in a safe, cost effective, and efficient manner and is responsible for the safeguarding, maintenance and proper utilization of all supplies, materials and equipment entrusted to or used by him, or subordinates.
  • Sets the standards for work performance and advises employees verbally, in writing, or by official performance rating of the level of performance. Supervises subordinates, coordinates their work scheduling and identifies their training and individual development needs.
  • Responsible for the protection of natural resources, and takes an active role to prevent unacceptable loss or damage to tribal lands through: clean equipment, no unnecessary environmental impacts (oil, diesel, gas spills), and minimizes operator error, carelessness and/or negligence.
  • Performs work in the procurement of the most effective and efficient services that provide for equipment, supplies or materials necessary for proper operation of equipment and vehicles for project or task completion. Maintains a proper inventory of material and supplies and is responsible for property management.
  • Responsible for written communication in the form of inspection reports, accidents reports, work progress reports and work accomplishment reports, each submitted as necessary without delay.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Able to operate heavy equipment, light trucks, and light to heavy machinery.
  • Able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Familiar with gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Mechanical knowledge of engines, motors, and appliances.
  • Experience operating, diagnosing, repairing, and servicing heavy equipment, passenger vehicles, trucks, and small equipment, tools, and appliances.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One year's certificate from college or technical school plus six months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to pass a Background Check.
  • Must have a valid New Mexico Driver's License with no DWI/ DUI convictions from any Tribal, State, or Federal Court within a five (5) year timeframe and must be insurable under the Tribe's Insurance Carrier.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, to handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
