Description of Work

Employees in this class, under general direction, perform a wide variety of highly responsible and complex clerical support activities as well as some administrative functions in the Public Defender's Office. An employee in this class is responsible for directing and coordinating the various clerical functions within the office and ensuring that work activities are completed accurately and on a timely basis. A Legal Secretary II is expected to have considerable knowledge of criminal law procedures and must have the ability to exercise good judgment and decision-making. A Legal Secretary II may be required to supervise, train, and evaluate lower-level clerical employees.
Required Minimum Entrance Qualifications

Have a minimum of five (5) years full-time progressively responsible clerical experience, three (3) years of which were in a Prosecutor's, Public Defender's or Family Court office, and must include at least one year of experience in either District, Circuit or Appellate Court Divisions of the office, OR

Have graduated from a two (2) year clerical or business training program from an accredited college or business school; AND
Have a minimum of three (3) years full-time progressively responsible clerical experience in a Prosecutor's, Public Defender's, or Family Court office which includes at least one year of experience in either District, Circuit or Appellate Court Divisions of the office.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIESAn employee in this class performs generally sedentary work activities requiring the occasional lifting of objects weighing thirty-five (35) pounds or less.

EVALUATION CONTENT
The selected candidate must take a post-offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test given by a County appointed physician before the first day of employment. An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test. Applicants for County employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check. Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the County system. For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications. This list remains in effect for three months unless exhausted or extended.
