Job Description

The Altenheim and CarDon and Associates are now hiring an experienced American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter. We offer daily and weekly pay options and great benefits!

BASIC FUNCTION: Provides in-person sign language interpretive services for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, CREDENTIALS: Must be 18 years of age. A minimum of 3 years of experience that involved transliterating and interpreting through ASL is required. Certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf is preferred.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Health Facility Administrator

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The associate must be able to perform each essential function effectively to be successful in this position.

1. Provide in-person sign language interpretive services of both sign to voice and voice to sign utilizing Signed English (SE) and/or American Sign Language (ASL).

2. Accurately interpreting spoken work situations, such as conversations, training/ in-services, shift reports, and meetings, in a professional manner.

3. Working with associates and supervisors within the community to facilitate effective communication with Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals.

4. Collaborating with other ASL interpreters.

5. Respects and protects the privacy and confidentiality of resident information at all times.

6. Attends all mandatory Inservice training meetings as posted.

7. Participates in fire and disaster drills.

8. Performs other related or similar duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to read, understand, and carry out instructions that are provided in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to facilitate communication with discretion and impartiality. Strong social awareness for interpretation with empathy and attentiveness. Understanding of the cultural norms and conventions of the American Deaf Community. Ability to imitate nuances, tone information, and inflection to enable the Deaf or Hard of Hearing person to fully receive messages. Ability to track and remember information and concepts while simultaneously interpreting them. Physical stamina and dexterity for extended interpretation services.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Maintains good attendance and attends mandatory in-service meetings. Is able to work overtime and weekends if needed. Has sufficient hearing to hear conversational voice and adequate near and far vision to complete duties.
