Overview
The Registered Nurse (RN) - Med Surg (Nights) plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive care to patients with various medical conditions in a fast-paced hospital environment. Responsible for patient assessment, the RN will develop and implement individualized care plans while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. The night shift presents unique challenges, requiring the RN to manage multiple patient needs in a limited resource environment while ensuring safety and comfort. As a key member of the healthcare team, the RN is essential in monitoring patient conditions, updating families, and performing necessary medical procedures. The role demands physical stamina and emotional resilience, as nurses often deal with critical situations, fluctuating patient conditions, and end-of-life care. This position not only impacts patient outcomes but also contributes to a positive work environment and enhances overall patient satisfaction, making the RN - Med Surg a pivotal part of the healthcare delivery system.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough patient assessments and document findings in a timely manner.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans for each patient.
- Administer prescribed medications and treatments as directed by physicians.
- Monitor and record vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature.
- Perform basic life support and respond to emergency situations quickly and effectively.
- Collaborate with physicians, specialists, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient care.
- Educate patients and families on health management, treatment plans, and medications.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to hospital policies and regulations.
- Participate in night shift handover meetings to ensure continuity of care.
- Assist with diagnostic tests, procedures, and surgeries as necessary.
- Utilize electronic health records (EHR) systems to manage patient care documentation.
- Support nursing peers through mentorship and guidance in practice.
- Ensure that all medical equipment is functioning and report any malfunctions.
- Keep the patient environment clean, safe, and conducive to healing.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and educational programs.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Current state RN license and certification to practice nursing.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
- At least 1 year of recent medical-surgical nursing experience.
- Familiarity with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
- Strong understanding of nursing best practices and evidence-based protocols.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
- Physical stamina to stand for long periods and lift patients as necessary.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Critical thinking skills and sound clinical judgment.
- Commitment to patient-centered care and continuous learning.
- Proficient in basic medical terminology.
- Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
